Recap: Georgetown 83, DePaul 75

Image from here
Tonight's game was a reminder of just how hard it is to win a Big East conference game on the road, as the Hoyas lead throughout but struggled to put away the DePaul Blue Demons before finally prevailing, 83-75.

The general impression I took away from tonight was that Georgetown wasn't going to get many calls and the Blue Demons were going to make some tough shots.  The Hoyas did themselves no favors on the free throw line, missing 8 of their first 12 attempts.  But thanks to a strong defensive effort in the first half, the Hoyas were able to establish and maintain enough separation to tough out another conference road win.

Markel Starks "could not go" tonight, so Otto Porter had his first career start. While Starks is actually one of the biggest culprits on turnovers [TO Rate = 22%], he's also a primary ball handler against the press, and that's what DePaul threw at Georgetown all night. Sure enough, the Hoyas struggled with turnovers: only at Louisville and at West Virginia did the Hoyas turn it over more. Not clear to me what ails Starks but hopefully he returns soon.

Recap: Georgetown 86, DePaul 75

It took an 11-1 record in one of the hardest out-of-conference schedules in the country to convince Hoya fans and the nation that this year's team would be different, better, more consistent.

It only took two conference games to realize that it won't.

Georgetown came out today and gave a defensive effort that may have yielded a loss to 14 other Big East teams, but luckily for them they were playing that 15th conference opponent:  the currently woeful DePaul Blue Demons.  The Hoyas walked away with an 11-point victory that was - at best - a head-scratcher.

One of the main reasons that Georgetown's defense was so awful today was its offense - or rather a specific part of its offense, the dread live-ball turnover.  Coming into today's game, the Hoyas had committed turnovers on >20% of their possessions only twice in the past six games: at Temple and at Notre Dame.

But to be a bit more stats-wonky about things, take a look at Georgetown's defensive performance so far this season: the team has had three terrible defensive games.  One was against Loyola, where almost the entire second half was devoted to letting the bench play, so I'll ignore it (the defense was fine in the first half).  The other two were at Missouri and today.  In both of those games, Georgetown allowed their opponent to steal the ball more than 16% of offensive possessions; the Tigers turned 15 steals into 24 points, while today the Blue Demons turned 12 steals into 16 points.

To put this another way:
. poss. after steal other possessions
Opponent Count Def. Eff. Count Def. Eff.
Missouri 15 160 69 113
DePaul 12 133 58 102
Georgetown has allowed a steal rate above 15% only one other game this season - at Temple.

Meanwhile, during the second half today when DePaul seemed able to score at will, the Hoyas were only able to force 4 turnovers.  By getting so many trips down the court with a scoring attempt, the Blue Demons were inevitably going to improve their offensive efficiency.

Another stat of interest today was the dreaded rebounding issue.  DePaul attacked the offensive glass with abandon today, gather 18 rebounds on 41 opportunities [44%].  But a strange thing happened.  In spite of those 18 offensive rebounds, the Blue Demons managed only managed 11 second-chance points.  At least for today, Georgetown's rebounding problems weren't a big driver of the poor defense.

So did anything go right?

The offense was actually just a hair less efficient then we'd expect, thanks to strong 2-pt shooting, especially by Jason ClarkJulian Vaughn and friends gathered 13 offensive rebounds, which the Hoyas managed to convert into 19 points.

And, in the end, the Hoyas walked off the court with a conference win.

Recap: Georgetown 67, DePaul 50

The Hoyas took the court today against DePaul for their last tune-up before their Big East schedule becomes considerably tougher, and cruised to a 17-point victory at the Allstate Arena.

Today's game was not available here in the hinterlands, not even on ESPN360 (much to my, and apparently others, consternation), so this will be much more of a stats dump than recap.

Today's pace was, dare I say, glacial - DePaul came into the game as the slowest-paced team in the Big East, and the Hoyas were willing to oblige.  The Blue Demons also came into the game with the worst offense in the Big East, averaging 0.97 points per possession, and essentially hit that mark once you account for the Hoyas stellar defense so far this year.

Once again, the Hoyas put up a low turnover number (12) that was generated as much by the deliberate pace as an improvement in ball-handling.  While both teams held on to the ball well in the 1st half, the game got sloppy in the Vepser half - I don't believe this was garbage-time nonsense:  Georgetown committed four turnovers in five possessions in the 2nd half (two on steals) that allowed DePaul to cut a 17-point lead to 11 and led to JTIII calling a 30-sec timeout.

The Hoyas next opponent (Marquette) is 23rd nationally (2nd in the Big East) in forcing steals, so Wednesday's game should prove a real test.

Having said that, G'town had a solid offensive game today - they made almost 2/3 of their 2-pt shots thanks in part to only 8 2-pt jumpshots (and they made 4 of those).  After shooting 27% [12/45] from deep in their three games prior to Big East play, the Hoyas have now made 44% to start conference play - 4/10 against the Johnnies and 8/17 today.  Free throw shooting could have been better, but that was an equal opportunity effort - five Hoyas missed seven combined shots - that I'd just as soon chalk that up to happenstance.

Greg Monroe used ~24% of available possessions today, but took only ~15% of the shots [6/39] while he was on the court, preferring the role of facilitator.  He had another 4 turnovers, but this may just be something that Hoya fans will have to live with so long as Monroe serves as the main handler in half-court sets.

Chris Wright cooled off a bit after a great two-game stretch, although an off. rating of 110 while using 27% of possessions - and shooting 5/5 on 2FGs - is nothing to sneeze at.  As I said last game, if he can cut down his turnover rate, he may become a great player, not just a very good one.

In yesterday's post about shot selection, I noted that Austin Freeman and Jason Clark had cooled off on outside shots, and they proceeded to shoot a combined 6/11 on 3FGs.  Just wait to read all the horrible things I'll say about them before the next game.

Stats pages will get updated late tonight or tomorrow.

Speaking of which, I finally started the Individual Net Points page for this season, which is still a work in progress.  Net points is a single number to describe how each player performed in each game - I think it's vastly superior to plus/minus stats, but is still a simplistic way to describe a player statistically.  You're really better off looking at the HD box score line or, perish the thought, watching the actual game.

Recap: Georgetown 48, DePaul 40

Georgetown was able to put another tally in the win column tonight against lowly DePaul, but there was little improvement shown on offense from Tuesday's loss at St. John's.

The Hoyas head into the Big East tournament as a 12-seed against those St. John's Redmen on Tuesday at 2pm EDT.

Let's run the numbers:

We didn't have the game on TV out here in the Comcast hinterlands; instead it was the ugly SHU-Marquette affair. And since williambraskyiii says, "If you didn't see the game, you shouldn't be able to comment on it. It was a freakin' clinic!" who am I to argue?

Without further ado, let's run the numbers:

  • The game was essentially over at 7:24 left in the 1st half, when Jon Wallace hit a 3 FG to put the Hoyas up 28-11.
  • From the reports I gather on Hoyatalk, those who did see the game thought it was an offensive showcase in the 1st half, but that's not really so, due to 10 turnovers out of 38 total possessions.
  • The 65.7 Def. Eff in the 1st half was the 2nd best defensive first half for Georgetown this year (60.8 vs. Michigan). In that game, the Hoyas forced 9 TOs on 31 possessions; this time, it was the Blue Demons' shooting (eFG = 27.3%) that doomed them.
  • Garbage time (aka the 2nd half) will skew the rebounding stats a bit, but Georgetown did a good job controlling the glass in the 1st half.
