Recap: Temple 68, Georgetown 65

JT3 checks his pockets for change during the game
Stephan Goldsmith, PrincetonBasketball.com

The Georgetown Hoyas fell into an 11-point hole midway through the first half against the hot shooting of the Temple Owls, and a slog of a second-half comeback came up three points short tonight in Philadelphia.

Game stats were posted very late last night, so I'll just crunch the numbers and have a few moments of pith this morning.

Let's run the numbers:

A couple of weeks ago, I made the comment that eventually turnovers were going to bite the Hoyas.  Tonight they did.  In a one-possession game, the -6 turnover margin was as important a factor as any against Georgetown;  the Hoyas managed to end more than 1/4 of their possessions tonight without getting a scoring attempt.

Tonight was the first game perhaps since vs. ODU that the Hoyas were confronted with legitimate size up front, and it certainly felt like they Hoyas were being man-handled.  However, the rebounding stats show otherwise, as the Owls were well-contained on their offensive glass.  Where Temple did exploit Georgetown's big men was by scoring inside, a lot.  The Owls shot 7/9 on layups and tips in the first half, to along with 5/12 on 2FG jumpers, and that efficient shooting from inside the arc was the main driver to allow Temple to open a 7-point halftime lead.

Georgetown's defense stiffened in the Vesper half as Coach Thompson used a 2-3 zone more frequently, and the Owls' shooting touch regressed to the mean, but Georgetown continued to throw away offensive possessions and struggled to hit outside shots [1/7 3FG].  The Hoyas managed to tie the game once (at 56) and had possessions in the final seconds while only down 1 point, but couldn't find the magical touch that had delivered wins versus ODU and Mizzou.

Georgetown's star of the game tonight was Julian Vaughn.  The first half was probably not one that Julian would like to repeat [0/4 2FG, 0/1 3FG], but he made his 2 FTs and managed 2 assists and 3 off. rebounds to contribute.  In the Vesper half, Vaughn became the main scoring weapon [3/4 2FG, 6/6 FT] as Austin Freeman and Jason Clark struggled.  That 8/8 effort at the FT line looked more and more important as the Hoyas managed to get the game down to a single possession at the end.

Chris Wright also was perfect at the line [6/6], and was generally content to try to set up his teammates for open shots.  Chris was clearly frustrated by his team's turnovers, notably expressing his displeasure with Henry Sims after Henry dropped a nice pace that would have become a layup in the second half.

Freeman and Clark were quiet tonight, although in different ways.  Austin struggled to get space for his outside shot all night, and ended the game 1/5 on 3FGs.  He tried to compensate by driving hard to the basket, but was often forced into acrobatic attempts.  Jason had the quietest 4/5 3FG shooting game I can remember, and wasn't able to keep his offense rolling in the second half [0/1 2FG, 1/2 3FG].  Their 7 combined turnovers were a big part of the problem for the Hoyas.

The bench was not much of a factor tonight outside of Jerrelle Benimon, who provided the only credible defensive help and also had a nice and-one play in the first half.

Finally, Hollis Thompson.  Hollis had trouble finding a role in the offense tonight [7% possessions used] and was exposed a bit on defense in his job as an undersized power forward.  But I suspect his entire game will be remembered for his wild driving lay-up attempt in the final seconds, especially in light of the sequence at the end of the Missouri game with his rushed 3FG attempt at the end of regulation.

A couple of thoughts:
  • Coach Thompson generally avoids timeouts in that situation, I think because he doesn't want to let the opponent have time to set up defensively.  His quote last night confirms this
"I told them I wouldn't call a timeout if they got the ball," Hoyas coach John Thompson III said. "It was a case of trusting them. That's the way the ball bounces."
  • When a team is trailing at the end of the game, it makes sense to get off an attempt to tie or lead with several seconds left on the clock, so that an offensive rebound and follow can still win the game.  Julian Vaughn was near the basket when the shot went up.
  • Hollis managed to get into the paint before he put up his shot, and that's the best spot to be when 2 points wins the game.  But he shot as he flailed by the last Owl defender, and the attempt was a poor look.  Another quote from Coach Thompson:
“You come down to the end like that – these guys trust each other. Sitting here now, is that the shot we wanted to get? No, but that’s where we ended up."

I don't mind what Hollis had in mind, even though he served as the fifth option on offense all night.  I think most fans would have preferred a pass, either to Vaughn or back out to one of the three guards, but once a player gets that deep into the lane, a score-first mentality is fine.  I just wish Hollis had been more aggressive and jumped strong at the rim to force the Temple players to either block the shot or give a foul.  The Owls had managed 6 blocks in the game, and I wonder if this was in his mind, but at his size I think that's his best chance.

On to the next game.

Stats pages will update Friday night.
