Recap: Georgetown 63, Providence 53

This was called a foul by Nate Lubick.
I mean, Kadeem Batts took his head clear off!
The Georgetown Hoyas led wire-to-wire in an evening affair at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, 63-53.

It's fairly tonight before I was able to get the stats for the game, so I don't think I'll be able to offer much of a recap for the game.  Just a few quick thoughts:
  • Providence shot a woeful 4/28 in the first half [3/20 2FG, 1/8 3FG]. All those misses meant that, while they got a lot of offensive rebounds (nine), they only grabbed 36% of their available missed shots. Since 33% is typical, the defensive rebounding by the Hoyas in the first half wasn't nearly as bad as you thought.
  • The best player on the floor for Georgetown was Jason Clark, who seemed to be able to knock down a needed shot whenever the Friars were able to get the game close.
  • Nate Lubick looked strong [8 pts, 3 ast, 0 TO] in his limited time on the floor, and yes he was subject to one of the worst calls by an official this season. But it should also be pointed out that the other three fouls he committed in the game were legitimate, and serve as a bit of a concern. His offense has improved from a disaster to serviceable and now to useful, especially on a team that struggles to score. It's incumbent upon Nate to avoid the silly fouls that will limit his time.
  • Hollis Thompson struggled with his shot all night [3/9 2FG] but still walked off the court having made half his deep shots [2/4 3FG]. He also grabbed ten rebounds [2 OR, 8 DR] to earn a double-double.
  • Once again, the Hoyas missed a lot of free throws [14/23 FT] including the front end on three of their four one-and-one attempts. It's hard to envision all the points left at the free throw line not coming back to bite this team.
  • As dunks seem to be of great concern on HoyaTalk these days, it should be noted that the Hoyas out-dunked the Friars 3-2.
  • Vincent Council shot 4/15 from the floor in the game at the Verizon Center; tonight he shot 4/14. I'm guessing he'll be happy to not see the Hoyas again this year.

Recap: Georgetown 49, Providence 40

The Georgetown Hoyas and Providence Friars conspired to set back organized basketball at least 50 years with a nearly unwatchable performance this afternoon at the Verizon Center. The good guys pulled it out, 49-40; the game was considerably closer than the final score indicates.

How bad was it? The Hoyas failed to record an assist in the second half, which I suppose would be a bigger deal if they had made more than eight shots from the floor in the Vespers half.

Henry Sims was the second-best player on the floor today for Georgetown, but made only 2/13 2FG attempts. That included settling for six jumpers (and missing them all).

It gets worse - you could be a Providence fan and watch Gerald Coleman shoot an amazing 1/8 on FTs. Yeah, I thought it was a typo too, so I checked multiple box scores to confirm. He came into the game shooting 69% [=61/88] for the year.

As a team, the Hoyas ended up shooting 33% eFG - very close to the 34% effort against Howard five games ago.  Georgetown has only record two sub-40% shooting games in the previous two seasons (the two losses last year against Cincinnati), so this is clearly the stat to keep an eye on as conference-play unfolds.

So how did the Hoyas pull it out?
  • the aforementioned Gerald Coleman disaster on the FT line
  • limiting turnovers
  • defense
The defensive effort, highlighted by Alan in yesterday's post, is going to have to be where the Hoyas make their bones this year - for the first time since 2008, the Hoyas have an adjusted def. efficiency below 90% (yes, it's still early).  Rust never sleeps, and defense doesn't slump; so long as Georgetown can keep this up, they'll have a puncher's chance in games when their shots aren't falling.

But the other positive to take away is that the Hoyas played another game without committing many turnovers [TO rate = 12%].  Now the Friars aren't a team built on steals [265th nationally on turnovers forced coming into the game], but Georgetown was able to finish the game with a 13-7 turnover edge.  Those 6 extra possessions ending with a scoring opportunity - in a game where the Hoyas averaged 0.82 pts / possession - was roughly equivalent to a +5 point advantage.  A huge difference when G'town led by only four points with less than a minute left.

Recap: Georgetown 83, Providence 81

AP photo
Georgetown reminded their fans today of that famous proverb, "Live by the three, die by the three," with an apathetic second-half effort at the Verizon Center during an excruciating 2-point win over the Marshon Brookses.

The Hoyas put together 20 minutes of quality basketball in building a 12-point halftime lead, with deadly outside shooting [8/15 3FG] and surprising care with the basketball [3 TO on 33 possessions]. After relaxing in the locker room during intermission, the Hoyas came back out assuming the game was over. They forgot to get the Providence Friars to sign off on the plan.

With their shooting touch from behind the arc betraying them in the second half [0/11 3FG] and their bigs struggling mightily at the FT line [Vaughn & Lubick: 3/11], the Georgetown coaching staff was apparently out of ideas. And the habit of giving great defensive effort only in the first half over the last five games nearly was the team's undoing, as the Friars seemed able to score at will as they reduced a 14-point deficit to only 2 during an eleven possession stretch mid-way through the Vesper half.

What we saw in the second half today was the Hoyas reverting into the team that lost four straight games early in the conference schedule, just in time for their road trip up to the Carrier Dome. Should be fun.

In spite of a 14 minute stretch in the middle of the game where they were outscored 32-18, the Hoyas were able to pull out a 9-point victory over the Providence Friars at the Dunk tonight.

I'm not overly motivated tonight, so just a few bullet-point style thoughts:
  • Georgetown did not do a very good job on the defensive glass tonight.  Aren't you glad I fired up my stats program to tell you that?  Well, it's true.  Fully half of all Friar missed shots ended up right back with them.  This was the worst defensive rebounding effort by the Hoyas this year (previous worse against Duke).  But if you account for the fact that Providence was the 7th best offensive rebounding team in the nation coming into the game . . . this was still the worst defensive rebounding effort of the year.
  • Having said that, this was actually the best defensive performance for the Hoyas since the start of conference play.  Why?  They forced the Friars into a ton of missed shots - missed jump shots actually.  Provy was 7/27 [26%] on 3FG, but also made only 1/13 2-pt jump shots.  That's a combined 8/40 [20%] on all jumpers, and they took a lot of them.  Jump shots made up 40/61 [66%] of their total shot attempts from the field.
  • Meanwhile, the Hoyas recognized the weakness in the Friar defense and began to pound the ball inside:  in the 2nd half, the Hoyas shot 14/18 on dunks, layups and tip-ins while only attempting 10 jump shots [3/8 2FG, 0/2 3FG].  This is the same pattern that they used in their last game against Villanova - taking outside shots in the 1st half, then pounding it inside in the 2nd half.
  • The four second-half turnovers on 38 possessions was also important to boost offensive efficiency in the 2nd half.

Keno Davis employed a very strange defensive strategy against Greg Monroe in the Vesper half tonight.  He had his big defenders sag off Monroe so he couldn't drive or get position in deep, daring him to shoot.  But he didn't.

Instead, Chris Wright and Julian Vaughn took turns cutting straight for the hoop, while Austin Freeman and either Jason Clark or Hollis Thompson camped outside to keep the defense honest.  And Monroe would hit the cutter with a picture-perfect pass nearly every time, for an easy layup (Wright) or dunk (Vaughn).  Monroe had 9 assists in the 2nd half, while Wright and Vaughn combined for 31 points on 12/15 shooting on 2FGs.  In fact, the Hoyas made 14 FGs while Greg was on the court in the second half, and he assisted 9 of those.  As Len Elmore said while calling the game, giving Monroe such great sight-lines for passing to cutters was suicide.

Thompson and especially Clark struggled shooting the ball today, although Hollis was able to contribute some solid defense.  Jerrelle Benimon and Henry Sims (!) saw some action in the Lift-off half when Monroe picked up his second foul, and while both proved fine as defensive subs, neither were much help towards the cause on offense.

There's been some chatter about a play in the 2nd half where the Hoyas got their passing on. I've uploaded it here for your viewing pleasure. All five Hoyas touched the ball in rapid succession to set up a layup.

Recap: Georgetown 82, Providence 75

I've had a very busy day today, but apparently Georgetown was able to pull out a win against Provy with a strong second half.

Let's run the number:

The first thing I noticed is the dramatic difference in pace between the two halves: there were nearly 50% more possessions in the 2nd half. I went and looked at the play-by-play to see if the Friars were giving fouls with lots of time left in the Vesper half to extend the game (i.e. increase possessions), but I see only four fouls given in the last 1:00 of play. I do notice that offensive rebounds dropped quite a bit from 1st to 2nd half for both teams, so this may have contributed.

Providence had a strong offensive first half today, thanks to making 5/9 3FGs. Providence is not a particularly good outside shooting team (31% 3FG coming in), so their early marksmanship was likely a surprise to both teams. Meanwhile, the Hoyas countered by gathering more than half of their own available misses (7/13 OR), which lead to the second straight game with strong offensive rebounding overall.

The second half was most notable to G'town fans for a 6:41 stretch where the Hoyas outscored the Friars 21-2. For all but the 1st two points of that stretch, Georgetown ran a lineup of C. Wright (So), J. Clark (Fr), A. Freeman (So), H. Sims (Fr) and G. Monroe (Fr), and all five players scored at least 2 points during the run.

Providence didn't quit, but actually fought back to a single possession game (76-73, 1:18) before succumbing, but I'll again point out that hot outside shooting (4/6 3FG during that stretch) was the main engine that brought them, and the Friars missed their last 3FGA in the final minute.

D. Summers again struggled to stay in the game with foul difficulties, and played only 46 possessions. Except for 3 turnovers, his offensive game was strong in all facets (2/4 2FG, 1/2 3FG, 5/6 FT, 2 OR). However, the play-by-play indicates that he struggled on the defensive end.

C. Wright's overall slump continued for the 3rd straight game, even as he seemed to regain his shooting touch from the field (5/7 2FG, 2/3 3FG). Unfortunately, he coupled that with 0/2 FT and 6 turnovers.

Fellow slumper A. Freeman had a strong game today, even as his outside shot still eludes him (0/2 3FG), by making 7/9 2FG, 4/6 FT, 3 OR and 0 TOs). Freeman was the most efficient offensive player for the Hoyas today.

J. Sapp was also a positive contributor (in limited possessions) today, but he did it not with efficiency but with quantity. Sapp had a high usage rate (10.6/47 = 22.5%) for the first time since the Maryland game (his only other >20% usage game). Mr. Sapp struggled from the floor (1/4 2FG, 0/2 3FG), but contributed 5 assists to 3 turnovers. He also played his signature strong defense today (5 DR, 3 S, 1 Bk).

And the Player of the Game is . . . Greg Monroe. His stat line is just remarkable, so I'll just reprint it here:
GU Min +/- Pts 2PM-A 3PM-A FTM-A FGA A Stl TO Blk OR DR PF

Reading through it, several thought come to mind:
  • He was strong both offensively (5/7 2FG, 3/3 FT, 8 A [!], 3 OR) and defensively (5 S [!], 2 Bk, 8 DR).
  • His 5 turnovers are a bit problematic, but should be viewed in the context that he serves as a (the?) primary distributor in the half-court offense.
  • Hoyas fans should just enjoy his performances while they can.
J. Clark and H. Sims were the main bodies off the bench today, and neither disappointed. Clark was his usually efficient self on offense, while his defense is still a bit of a work in progress - although to be fair, he often replaced J. Sapp today, who is G'town's best defensive guard. Sims played another strong game spelling Summers, although he continues to be passive on offense (3.4/24 = 14% usage); to be fair, as a freshman who just recently saw his playing time increase, that usage rate is likely appropriate (see J. Sapp's freshman year for an example).

Today's tip-of-the-cap goes to M. Brooks, who played a nice all-around game today and looks to be having a strong season (ORtg = 122.8) in somewhat limited minutes - I suppose W. Efejuku blocks him from starting?

Providence Preview

How have the Friars looked so far this season?

Here are the current four factors for the Friars:
. Offense Defense
Adj. Efficiency 105.7 (86) 95.9 (88)
eFG% 51.2 (96) 47.8 (130)
Turnover % 19.3 (88) 22.0 (122)
Off Rebound % 38.5 (39) 34.2 (195)
FT Rate 24.9 (161) 28.9 (49)

Providence has been a balanced team in almost every sense of the word. They have been mediocre, to begin with, ranking 83rd overall in Pomeroy. They are in the 80s in both offensive and defensive efficiency. Their shooting and turnover stats are more or less in that vein as well.

So why should the Hoyas be wary?

Rebounding. With Geoff McDermott (Sr.), Jonathan Kale (Sr.) and Randall Hanke (Sr.) seeing significant time, the Friars are strong offensive rebounders. They have no one in DeJuan Blair's class, of course, but together that big man rotation will generally have two players on the floor grabbing 20%-24% of offensive rebounding chances combined. When you consider that Monroe and Summers combine for about the percentage of defensive rebounds, you can see this being an issue.

Providence's defensive strengths are in not fouling and defending the three. There's certainly a scenario there where the fouls aren't being called inside so the Hoyas fall back on taking threes. This is not a good scenario.

Overall, though, the Hoyas are simply the better team and are at home. If they do not collapse on the boards, they should take this one.

Quick comments:
  • For the 2nd consecutive game, Georgetown rode hot outside shooting in the 2nd half to put up a high efficiency number. This time, it was enough to win the game.
  • In addition to the 5-8 3FG shooting in the 2nd half (can we declare Jon Wallace's shooting slump officially over?), the Hoyas improved their already gaudy OR % and committed only 4 turnovers on 28 possessions. This was the same formula that led to the strong 2nd half against Syracuse.
