Some quick thoughts:

• Cincinnati grabbed a ton of offensive rebounds in the second half [9 of 19 available misses], but was actually under it's conference average [35%] overall for the game.
• Porter, Starks, Lubick and Smith-Rivera were all better than +10 in plus/minus for the game, but only one other Hoya (Ayegba) had a positive plus/minus.
• This was the third consecutive game, and fourth in five, where Otto Porter was in double-digits in Net Points. I wonder if anyone outside of the Hoya-sphere realized just how good he is.
• In spite of the winning streak and the out-right lead in the Big East standings as of this morning, I still have the Hoyas rated as the fourth best team in the conference. Delusion, meet cynicism.

Recap: Cincinnati 72, Georgetown 70 [2OT]

The Georgetown Hoyas saw their stay at the Big East tournament come to a premature end courtesy of a gutty come-from-behind win by the Cincinnati Bearcats, 72-70.

The game went two overtimes today, thanks to last second heroics in regulation by Otto Porter and in the first overtime by Henry Sims, but the worm tuned in the second extra session when Cashmere Wright made a tough layup that proved to be the difference.

Some quick thoughts as I watch a replay of the game:

The Hoyas drew 23 fouls on 57 possessions yesterday against Pittsburgh, but only 14 on 72 possessions today (and of those 14 total fouls by the Bearcats, four came in a single possession). Now this isn't a criticism of the refs for today's game, but rather an observation about how the two games were called. Yesterday was called tight, which we generally think benefits Georgetown's motion offense. Tonight was called loose, especially with respect to the more aggressive Cincinnati defense. The Hoyas couldn't adjust - and missed half their FTs after intermission when they did get to the line. [N.B. - Cinci was 2nd lowest in FT/FG allowed in conference, while Pitt was 11th].

Did Nate Lubick not get a fair shake today? The argument goes that he had one of his best games of the year in the first meeting with the Bearcats, but Nate never got on the floor in the Vespers' half. It's hard to say, but I didn't see anything in his 7 possessions played to indicate he was over-matched today.

Still watching the replay: with less than nine minutes left in regulation, an eleven-point lead and the ball, the game very much feels to be the Hoyas to win. I think I felt the same way the last time the teams played.

Jason Clark was rated as an overall positive today, rating +1.5 net points by the compiler, while Hollis Thompson was nearly -3. Thompson and Starks are capable of much better things, and as I noted yesterday, the Hoyas aren't going to win many games when those two aren't winning their matchups.

Does Mick Cronin have John Thompson III's number? Cronin has been coaching the Bearcats since 2008:

Recap: Cincinnati 68, Georgetown 64

The Hoyas played carelessly with the ball all night at the Verizon Center in losing to the Cincinnati Bearcats, 68-64.  In addition to the sloppy offensive effort, Georgetown was shredded late on isolation plays, allowing 12 points on their last 6 defensive possessions.

"Other than the turnovers, Coach Thompson, how did you enjoy the offense?"

The Hoyas shot 6/10 on 3FGs (including Jason Clark's errant mid-court shot at the final buzzer) and abused the Bearcats inside the paint [14/19 on dunks, layups and tip-ins].  They gathered more than a third of their own missed shots for the first time since at Louisville.  But Georgetown simply couldn't put together a great offensive game because of the incessant turnovers [17], usually on a Cincinnati steal [13].  The turnover differential in the game [17-9] meant that the Bearcats had eight more offensive possessions end with a scoring attempt.  In a game that was tied with less than 90 seconds remaining, that's a killer.

And not to beat a dead horse, but down near the bottom of the HD box score, we track points-after-steals; tonight the Hoyas trailed in that stat 14-0.

But here's the funny thing - the offense really wasn't the problem tonight.  Seriously.  Cincinnati is actually a solid defensive team - they had allowed 0.91 pts / possession in their first three conference games, mostly by turning over their opponents.

No, the real issue tonight was the Hoyas' defense.

The Bearcats came into the game struggling to make shots in conference games - 40 2FG%, 42 eFG% coming in, which were second-worst and worst in the conference, respectively.  Yet tonight, the Hoyas watched Dion Dixon and Sean Kilpatrick manage a combined 14/21 on 2FGs in the game, and the Bearcats as a whole shoot a cool 50% eFG for the game.

Georgetown's early season success was predicated upon their stingy defense and just enough offense to put teams away.  The Hoyas are now finding that they can't get the stops as easily as they once did, and will have to find a fix to stay with the top teams in the league.

Thankfully, the conference season is still early on and the young Hoyas can still adjust and improve.

The Georgetown Hoyas played a competitive 30 minutes before getting blown off the court at the Fifth Third Arena today by the Cincinnati Bearcats, 69-47.

At this point, I think there are two ways to look at how the Hoyas are playing at the end of the conference schedule:

1. It's not as bad as you think.  Georgetown has lost 4 of 5 games, but has only been non-competitive at the end in two of those games - both versus Cincinnati.  Both at UConn and versus Syracuse, the games came down to the last few possessions and the opponent did enough to win.  Maybe the Bearcats are simply the perfect matchup against the Hoyas this season, and Georgetown isn't winning whether Chris Wright is available or not (they were down 7 in the second half when Wright was hurt in the first game).
   
   
2. The ship be sinking.  Georgetown is playing like a dead man walking right now.  Austin Freeman is about the lone credible threat on offense, and everyone knows it and is forcing him to either give up the ball or take a tough shot.  Let's face it, Freeman is not Kemba Walker and is never going to create many shots for himself.  Meanwhile, Julian Vaughn and Jason Clark, the only upperclassmen capable of covering for the loss of Wright's scoring and leadership, instead have disappeared.

I wish I could tell you definitively that it's scenario #1, but I can't.

I don't think the season is over - with the current personnel, the Hoyas should be able to win at least one game in each of their next two tournaments - but there is certainly some truth to the notion that expectations should be at a season-low.

Georgetown simply isn't making shots, either inside or outside.  And without the ability to play lockdown, stifling defense for 40 minutes (or even 20 minutes), the Hoyas just can't win without making those shots.

The Georgetown Hoyas came out tonight and looked like they'd never seen a 2-3 zone defense in their lives.  The result was a sad, sad offensive performance in a humbling 12 point loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats, 58-46.

Georgetown trailed for a significant portion of the Lift-Off half, falling behind as much as 19-8 at the midpoint, but capped an 8 possession 18-5 run with an Austin Freeman tip-in to take a 26-24 lead with 90 seconds left in the half.  Over the next 15 possessions spanning halftime, the Hoyas managed to score only 3 points while allowing 19 to the Bearcats; Cincinnati led 43-29, and the game was effectively over.

The Hoyas came into the game 9-1 in their last 10 games, and walked off the floor with the very real possibility of ending the season on a three game slide.  The last two games for Georgetown are hosting the Syracuse Orange - the quintessential 2-3 defenders - and then out to Cincinnati for a rematch with their masters of tonight.

In addition to losing tonight's game, Georgetown also lost their best player over the past 5 games, Chris Wright, with an apparent left wrist injury.  Wright tried to play after the injury in a combination of grit and foolishness, as it was obvious as soon as he walked back on the court that he couldn't use his left hand at all.  With the matchup against the Orange only 3 1/2 days away, it is unclear if Wright will be able to play on Saturday.

Edited to add:  Tarik El-Bashir reports a broken hand for Wright.  Worst news possible.

Apparently, Austin Freeman has already adjusted to his diagnosis of diabetes, as he and the Hoyas enjoyed a tremendous defensive second half on the way to a 27-point win today at the Verizon Center.

I'm not sure what happened in the respective locker rooms at half time, but Cincinnati came out completely flat and the Hoyas were willing to take advantage of that.  For a long stretch of the Vesper half, if Lance Stephenson didn't score the Bearcats didn't:  Georgetown went on a 32-8 run where Born Ready scored all of his team's points.

And with that, the regular season is over.  The Hoyas head off to Madison Square Garden for the Big East tournament (warning: pdf), playing the winner of the DePaul-South Florida first round game at noon on Wednesday.

The most striking aspect of this game was the rebounding.  Much like the game at Louisville, Georgetown was able to neutralize the glass and take away their opponent's greatest offensive strength.  The Bearcats came into the game as the 25th best offensive rebounding team in the nation (gathering 38% of their own missed shots), and it's really the only aspect of offense in which they excel.

The game started with Cinci gathering 6 offensive rebounds in their first 10 possessions (on 9 missed shots), and I thought it was going to be another game where the Hoyas just got out-toughed inside.  Instead, Greg Monroe and friends were able to control the boards the rest of the way - there were 26 more available misses for Cincinnati in the game, and they only grabbed four of them [4/26 = 15%].  Nice.

The second half was an offensive showcase for Greg Monroe, as he and the Hoyas shot 12/16 on dunks, layups and tip-ins.  Ibrahima Thomas picked up two quick fouls after halftime and had to sit, and the Hoyas recognized and took advantage of that.

Greg Monroe had as nice a game as I can remember - by my estimation, likely his best game since the first game against Rutgers.  Efficient shooting [8/11 2FG, 3/4 FT], only 1 turnover and a completely dominant effort on the glass.

Austin Freeman played as if there hadn't been much going on in his life over the past two weeks.  He was a bit more aggressive today than we're used to seeing [31% poss. used] but made his shots at the normal clip while playing his best defensive game in a while (all year?).  A couple of weeks ago, I wondered if anyone realized what an offensive weapon he really is, but I think the past two games show what happens to the Hoyas when he is out or suffering.

Chris Wright facilitated and scored.  He would have had an even better game if a couple of his layup attempts would have gone in.

Jason Clark continues to struggle with his outside shot [now 8/31 in his last 7 games] and turnovers, but contributed in other areas (including the unenviable task of being the primary cover on Stephenson).  His game today showed a nice example of how to fight through a tough shooting game to remain a positive for his team.

Julian Vaughn also had tough time with turnovers.  He's now run off six straight games with a negative net points stat, as I fear the Big East grind has caught up to him.

One point I will make is that, once again, Georgetown's defensive evaporated in the 2nd half. This is something that SFHoya99 discussed over at HoyaTalk, and probably is the biggest culprit in what is turning into a lost season.

Quick comments:

• Georgetown's 1st half efficiency was dragged down a bit by their being shutout on the offensive glass (0 out of 11 attempts). This was the 3rd time this year that the Hoyas were not able to gather a single offensive rebound in a half (1st half vs. American, 2nd half vs. Villanova). The Bearcats came into the game as the best defensive rebounding team in Big East conference play.
  

• For the 2nd game in a row, the Hoyas did a good job today taking care of the basketball, keeping their TO Rate below 20%. The defense forced the 2nd highest TO Rate in conference play (best was vs. St. John's).

• That 2nd-half FTA Rate is the highest so far this season for Georgetown.

• Cincinnati failed to block a shot today - the limited play of Biggie McClain hurts them here, as he is their main (only) shot blocking threat. While the Hoyas outside shooting slipped in the 2nd half, they scored virtually at will on 2FGs, likely due to recognizing that the Bearcats offered little threat inside defensively.

• On the other end of the court, Roy Hibbert's 5 blocked shots helped hold Cinci's 2FG shooting under 40% for the game, just the 2nd time that they've done this in their last 7 games.
