One of the advantages of the tempo-free box score over the regular box score is that you don't have to see just how many fouls there were.
Quick comments before I go to bed:
- At least the Hoyas' defensive ranking will go up.
- Villanova's field goal shooting in the 2nd half was comparable to St. John's first half performance against the Hoyas.
- Georgetown turning the ball over nearly 1 in 3 possessions in the 2nd half was reason #1 why the Wildcats were able to hang around - also note that less than a third of those TOs were due to Villanova steals. Not getting a single offensive rebound (albeit on only 10 opportunities) was reason #2.
- Georgetown shot a respectable 35% from 3FG for the game, about their season average.
Edited to add: I just watched the last play a few more times, and I stand by my statement that it was a foul - Stokes bumped Wallace, causing him to step out of bounds - and other officials agree with me. But I wouldn't have minded if Donato had blown his whistle 0.1 seconds later.
Very nice job -- you beat me getting it posted (I will link to your post if you don't mind).
ReplyDeleteDon't be so hard on your Hoyas, the (high) turnover rate and (low percentage of) offensive rebounds are actually trademarks of Villanova's defense. For the past several seasons the 'Cats have not defended the field goal attempt very well (typically ranked somewhere near the middle of D1 -- too many teams have had "career" nights from beyond the arc versus the Wildcats this season; their average for the BE season is 39.3%) which they compensate for by limiting scoring opportunities (forcing turnovers) and denying second chance opportunities (low offense rebounding). Steals were actually pretty close to "average" for Nova, the difference you note in the write-up is usually explained by fouls. I have not checked the gamelog yet, but if past performance is a guide on this, opponents can be harried into making bad passes, but many will be offensive fouls, as suggested by Villanova's half-over-half increase in FTA/FGA, not bad passes.
You're absolutely right that I forgot about offensive fouls in the turnover count.
ReplyDeleteFor what it's worth, this also may have been an issue in the Seton Hall game from a couple of weeks ago, and I believe that SHU played a similar style of defense against the Hoyas.
