About last night

While updating some of the stats pages this evening, I noticed something troubling in Georgetown's defensive effort last night against Seton Hall. It's not that the Hoyas allowed a team to shoot an eFG pct of 71%, but rather what kind of shots they allowed and the lack of turnovers. Allow me to explain.

Seton Hall shot out of their minds last night. It happens sometimes, as I pointed out in the game recap.
Let's take a look at the shots made by the Pirates last night, versus the shots made by Georgetown in their best shooting game of the season, versus Marquette [eFG = 70%]:

                     Dunks Layups 2pt J's 3FGs FTs
Seton Hall (2/21) 2/2 8/15 7/11 8/13 15/19
. 1.000 0.533 0.636 0.615 0.789

Georgetown (1/4) 0/0 12/12 9/13 6/18 13/23
. 1.000 0.692 0.333 0.565

Comparing the two games, the first thing you should notice is that the Hoyas and Pirates shot at about the same unconscious rate on their 2FG jump shots, making around 2/3 of their attempts. Those are the kinds of shots that defenses want to allow, and when a team makes that high a percentage it's trouble.

The Hoyas made everything they shot in the paint [12/12], while the Pirates made only a very good 59% [10/19]. A defense can live with 60% allowed on inside shots, so long as they can minimize those attempts. The Pirates had more than 40% of their field goal attempts from at or near the rim, which was a problem last night. The Hoyas, by contrast, only attempted 28% of their field goals as layups against Marquette (that selectivity may also explain the high shooting percentage).

The obscene shooting by the Pirates from behind the arc - as we were recently reminded by Ken Pomeroy - can be considered beyond the control of the Hoyas. Ken further expounded upon the idea today to point out that defenses can control how often a team will attempt a 3FG, but just don't have much control over how many of those attempts go in. To put it more succinctly, shit happens.

Obviously, Seton Hall also made a higher percentage at the free throw line than Georgetown in the respective games, but again those rates were within the range of variance that you can shrug at.

There's one other big stat difference between the two games:
                     TO Poss TO Rate
Seton Hall (2/21) 8 54 14.8

Georgetown (1/4) 17 65 26.2
Not only were the Pirates shooting at an unconscious clip last night, they weren't giving away many possessions without scoring attempts. Meanwhile the Hoyas were able to beat Marquette in spite of a very sloppy game with the ball - in a 60 possession game, that difference in turnover rates is an extra 7 possessions, or an extra seven points for the Hoyas at their scoring clip last night.

Big deal, you say, it was just one night.

Well, here is how Hoyas' opponents have played in conference in their first 11 games, then the last four:
                     TO Poss TO Rate
Games 1-11 149 713 20.9
Syracuse (2/8) 9 63 14.3
St. John's (2/12) 6 57 10.6
Providence (2/18) 8 64 12.6
Seton Hall (2/21) 8 54 14.8

That is a troubling development. Either the defense is going to have to start generating more turnovers, or the team is going to have to live with giving up more points.

Recap: Seton Hall 73, Georgetown 55

Image from here
On a night that felt eerily like an opening round NCAA tournament game for Georgetown, the Hoyas ran into a Seton Hall team that couldn't miss a shot for long stretches of the game and were blown out, 73-55.

Not a lot of positives can be taken from tonight's game. In a meeting of two of the conference's better defensive teams, the Pirates - lead by Jordan Theodore - quite simply made a lot of shots and thereby had a spectacular offensive game. The Hoyas came into the game leading the conference in effective field goal defense, having allowed a season-high 55% eFG against Pitt. So what Seton Hall did tonight [71% eFG] should be recognized as extraordinary. Only two other teams have managed to hit the 70% level against JT3's Georgetown Hoyas: the Ohio Bobcats and the Baylor Bears. Don't feel obligated to click through on those links, by the way.

The absurdity of the situation came through in the second half as Theodore and friends took a number of questionable shots that simply went in, so much so that the play-by-play announcer began giggling uncontrollably during one replay. The Pirates made 15/24 [63%] jumpshots tonight, and when that happens the opponent must just tip their cap and head home.

The Hoyas own offense was a bit frustrating to watch, with the turnovers [7] in the first half and poor outside shooting in the second half [1/6 2FG jumpers, 1/6 3FG]. But two mitigating factors should be considered here: the Hoyas were playing a very good defensive team, and by comparison to the offensive circus taking place on the other side of the court, the Hoyas were certain to look bad.

BE Game of the Night: Seton Hall 90, Syracuse 68

Just a quick look at the biggest shocker so far of the Big East season, as Seton Hall blew the doors off of the Syracuse Orange in the Carrier Dome tonight.

I ran the stats mostly because I was curious if Jeremy Hazell had a good a night statistically as he thought he was having.

He did.

The box score shows that he scored 28 points in the game, but my preferred stat (Net Points) gives him credit for producing 22 points on offense.  What's more impressive to me is that he also lead the Pirates defensively, with a 71 DRating in the game thanks to 9 def. rebounds and 4 steals.  Hard to believe that this guy was literally running for his life a month ago.

While the outcome was a real surprise, I don't think I'd take away too many lessons from this game.

Seton Hall came into the game as the worst outside shooting team in conference play, at 22% [= 31/147].  That included a 3/26 effort at the Prudential Center just 17 days ago.  I'd expect that the game plan was very much to let the Pirates have at it from behind the arc, and it must have come as a slowly horrifying realization that Hazell and Theodore weren't going to miss many, even if the shot was from 28 feet.

But what should worry Syracuse fans a bit is the Orange offense.  This is the second time in three games that the team hasn't broken 1.0 ppp, and those performances were against Pitt and Seton Hall, neither elite defenses.

Syracuse now departs on a three-game road trip, and Pomeroy currently pegs them as underdogs for the first two games.  These next two games probably will tell us how good Syracuse really is.

All the goofy stats are below the jump.

Fouling up three, under seven seconds left

After Georgetown's 5-point win over Seton Hall on Tuesday, there was a bit of doom-and-gloom here and elsewhere about the Hoyas.  Ray Floriani, erstwhile contributor here and still blogging elsewhere, made it to the game, and sent along this missive.

NEWARK, NJ - A confession is in order. I had an officiating assignment of two high school games in Jersey City and got to the Rock at the half. The trip was only eight miles and at that time, there was little traffic to deal with. Our last high school game they turned the heat down, so media room coffee at the Rock hit the spot. At any rate…

Impressed with…Georgetown poise. You lose a seven point halftime lead and are now down seven with twelve to play as the home team is in the midst of a 21-7 run; many would have panicked. During the Seton Hall rally the Hoyas stayed together. No finger pointing or the like. They just maintained focus until they could get out of the slump. On the bench coach John Thompson III also maintained his cool. The only outburst of displeasure would be off a careless unforced turnover [ed. note: that was Nate Lubick's behind-the-back pass in the general direction of Julian Vaughn].

Also impressed with Austin Freeman. How could one not be? He had 28 points, and hit 10 of 13 from the floor including a few big ones at crunch time. Even Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said “Freeman is fun to watch.” Just not too much fun to try and stop.

Correct me if I’m wrong…But I would like to see a few more touches for Julian Vaughn. He has size and a low post presence. Vaughn is attempting 16% of the Hoya shots in conference play. Even utilizing him as a passer wouldn’t hurt. Vaughn has 11 assists, third on the Hoyas in Big East play. More touches and shots could mean more trips to the line where he is a 72% shooter. As noted, just a thought.

Rebounding . . . Read through this site some links and essays on Georgetown rebounding. In raw numbers the Hoyas were 36-35 in favor. The OREB percentage saw them trail the Hall 42-40%. That was largely due to a better second half. The first 20 minutes they had a 41-27% OREB pct deficit, but still led by seven. A 67% eFG mark during that time was largely responsible.

Coach Thompson mentioned in one piece that rebounding was not just on the big men. The guards contributed as Chris Wright and Jason Clark both had 6 (tied with Vaughn for the team lead on the game) and Freeman had 5.

Ray also sent along a link to another post he had on the game, discussing Coach Thompson's late game strategy of fouling when up by three and time for probably one decent look from deep by Seton Hall (link).

Recap: Georgetown 80, Seton Hall 75

princetonbasketball.com - Stephen Goldsmith
After watching a pair of great Big East match-ups yesterday, it makes me a little sad watching the Georgetown Hoyas reduced to scratching and clawing out a win tonight against the Seton Hall Pirates.

It's not that I don't enjoy Austin Freeman pulling a bit of a heat-check with a 26-foot swish as the shot-clock runs down, nor do I dismiss out-of-hand any road win the almighty Big East.

In fact, Pomeroy tells us that the Hoyas were only 4-point favorites coming into the game, and Seton Hall recently got back their big gunner in Jeremy Hazell.  And the Pirates played well against a top BE team just 10 days ago, when they lost to the Syracuse Orange while getting multiple cracks at tying up the game in the last two minutes.

But watching the second half, as Georgetown repeatedly gave up scores against the worst offense in the Big East [0.92 PPP in conference], is enough to let you know that - in spite of the win - it's time to lower expectations for the rest of the year.

For now, let's just run the numbers:

Recap: Georgetown 85, Seton Hall 73

Editors note:  This recap was written by Alan Greene (ignore the byline at the bottom)
----------------------
Well, that felt a bit like vintage III-era Georgetown.

No, not just the domination -- this was an 18-point game with 47 seconds left -- but the manner in which it occurred.

There were several devastating runs driven by a combination of exceptional half-court D and a flurry of made buckets. There was a second-half run by the opponent that was calmly refuted.

The typical Thompson-era weaknesses also appeared. Georgetown turned the ball over on almost 24% of its possessions, and gave up offensive rebounds at an alarming rate.

In other ways it felt different. For one, the defense was not particularly good. Yes, the numbers below are a little deceptive as Seton Hall scored eight points late when everything was decided, but overall the defense was not strong.

Part of that was the aforementioned offensive boards, but part of it was giving up a surprising number of easy buckets down low. The Hoyas did block 16% of Seton Hall's 2s, but it didn't keep the Hall from making layups.

On offense, Julian Vaughn gave the team a nice low post threat that felt like a throwback, and there was definitely a Jon Wallace-style feel to the team's three-point shooting, but stylistically it is interesting to see the little differences.

For one, Georgetown scored 22 fast break points. The Green-Wallace-Hibbert Hoyas might've taken four or five Big East games to generate that many.

The team still brings its big men to the top of the key to open the lane and sets screens constantly. In the past, these shots often came from step-back threes and back cuts. Those still happen; but now the team has added a couple of highly effective wrinkles: the screen/pick and roll and the dribble drive.

In the end, though, the similarities outweighed the differences. The Hoyas won because their combination of generating easy shots and excellent shooting overcame their turnovers and poor rebounding.

The difference between mirroring 05-06 and 06-07 could be how well the Hoyas can fix those last two issues.

Let's run the numbers:

At some point, a television announcer will see enough Hoya games (or Sports Information will send him or her a memo) to notice how much better the Hoyas are when Greg Monroe is on the floor, no matter how many shots he takes. He attracts defensive attention, facilitates and he's becoming absolutely devastating on defense, which is why he clocks in with the second best net points for the game.

Austin Freeman had an excellent game shooting, but five turnovers held down his overall effectiveness a bit.

Julian Vaughn, like most of the Hoyas, struggled a bit with rebounding today. He just couldn't seem to get a handle on anything. However, he showed off a series of excellent low post moves. Some plays he was merely physical; on another he had a great spin move in the lane that showed off some nice footwork.

Jerelle Benimon struggled in his short time on the floor, picking up some fouls and getting out-rebounded. But he wasn't out of place and his FT stroke was nice.

A series of folks thought this might be a bit of a breakout game for Henry Sims due to matchups. To a certain extent, they were right. Sims swatted a couple of shots, grabbed a key defensive board in the middle of the Seton Hall run and several offensive boards. He couldn't finish on offense, though, as he was a little weak with the ball.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do this, but I'm taking the easy way out and picking both Chris Wright and Jason Clark as my players of the game.

Many of Wright's buckets were of the easy layups variety, while Clark made a series of open and not so open jumpers. Clark's shooting was more impressive, but Wright's playmaking was just as important.

But they are mostly getting this award for completely shutting down Jeremy Hazell. Defense is a team endeavor, but Wright and Clark traded off on Hazell and harassed him all night. When the game was still in doubt, Hazell had only nine points.

Big East HD Box Scores - This time I mean it . . . maybe

West Virginia and Seton Hall tipped of the Big East regular season tonight with a 90-84 OT win for the Mountaineers in their game at the Prudential Center.

Last year I attempted to post HD box scores for as many Big East teams as possible, during conference play.  I made it almost until the end of January, when real life circumstances reduced my free time to virtually nil.

Foolishly, I'm going to try it again this year, starting with tonight's game.

Here's the deal - if the school posts usable play-by-play data on their team page, I will maintain a page for them with all available conference games posted (home and road).  If a school doesn't have the requisite info available, I'm not going to bother keeping a page.  I've played around a bit with an alternative source for play-by-play data [StatSheet.com], but it's not playing nice with my compiler so I'm going to limit things to just the official athletic department sites (links are in the table).

If you are interested in a box score for a team without "good" play-by-play, you should be able to find it whenever they play a "Yes" team from the table below.  St. John's is a unique case, where I believe those games played at Carnesecca Arena will have the info I need, but MSG games will not.  I'll keep a page going for the Johnnies, even though that's only four home games this season.  Obviously, any available road games will also be posted.

If you are a fan of one of the "No" schools and would like to see these HD box scores, please e-mail or call your Sports Information Director (SID) or equivalent and ask them to start posting the play-by-play.  I believe most (all?) teams are using StatCrew software, so they should be able to provide the play-by-play if they wanted [MSG games excepted].

Here's what I've got planned for this year:
School PBP Good? Comments
Cincinnati No No substitution data at team site
Connecticut No Seem to provide opponents' stat package
DePaul No Box score only at team site
Georgetown Yes Preferred style
Louisville Yes Same format as G'town
Marquette Yes Same format as G'town
Notre Dame Yes No 2nd half box score; can handle this
Pittsburgh Yes No 2nd half box score; can handle this
Providence No Box score only at team site
Rutgers No Box score only at team site
St. John's Maybe On-campus games only; MSG games have box score only
Seton Hall Yes Only pbp and final box score; can handle this
South Florida No No substitution data
Syracuse No Box score only at team site
Villanova Yes Same format as G'town
West Virginia No Box score only at team site

To view available box scores, just click on the Big East HD Box Scores link at the top right of the page (just below "Tempo-Free Stats 101"). That will bring you to the Georgetown page, then just click on the link for any available team.  For tonight, here's the direct link to the West Virginia-Seton Hall HD Box score.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While I'm here, I thought I'd mention that I've added another line to the HD box score.  Going back to an early attempt at tracking fast breaks, I'm now tracking points scored after steals and Off. Efficiency on possessions generated by steals (rather than "points off turnovers", which you can find in most detailed box scores).  If you stop and think about it, this efficiency is simply points after steals divided by steals [then multiplied by 100], but I'll save you the trouble of doing the math.

I'd say that this feature is still in the beta phase, meaning that I've only just added it and am still testing as I go.  Turns out that tonight's game was a lousy test since Seton Hall just doesn't give up the ball very often (WVU had only 1 steal!!).

Recap: Seton Hall 65, Georgetown 60

Sorry for the tardy post - real life is getting very busy for me these days.

There was an ugly incident in Newark, NJ on Sunday, masquerading as a college basketball game. In the end, the Seton Hall Pirates played less-poorly to pull out a five point win, their first against Georgetown since 2004.

Let's run the numbers:

Well, the Hoyas made their free throws and got half of their own missed shots . . . and that's about all the good news from yesterday.

If you tuned in to the game to watch a shooting exhibition, you came away disappointed. Georgetown made 3/22 3 FG (2/5 by J. Sapp, 1/17 by everyone else) - not to be outdone, Seton Hall went 0/13 3FG (0/10 by J. Hazell). While some of those missed shots were rushed as the shot clock was winding down, a number were open shots in the rhythm of the offense. The Hoyas also shot poorly from outside against WVU (2/16 3FG), and as I pointed out in that game recap, the offense tends to break down when there is no scoring from beyond the arc.

The Hoyas also were very sloppy with the ball in the 1st half, committing 12 turnovers on 32 offensive possessions. The fact that they lead at the half is attributable to their defense, and to making 2 pt. jumpers (5/8) rather than inside shots (4/7 on dunks, layups and tip-ins), which is usually not a sustainable strategy.

It wasn't, but not in the way you'd expect.

Georgetown was able to get more 2-pt shots from close in during the 2nd half, but many consisted of out-of-control drives: the Hoyas were 3/10 on dunks, layups and tip-ins in the 2nd half, and 2/5 on 2-pt jumpers. Coupled with more cold outside shooting (2/12 3FG, both made by Sapp), G'town became dependent upon getting to the FT line (17/20 FT), but couldn't make enough defensive stops to win the game.

Jessie Sapp was modestly efficient in the game, and did so while using 14% of available possessions (8.2/57). He was also the most effective defensive starter for the Hoyas. Hopefully, this is a sign that he's coming out of his mid-season funk.

Greg Monroe (Player of the Game) was his usual efficient offensive self, although in suprisingly few possessions used (13%). This was the first time since the Savannah St. game that Monroe used less than 20% of the possessions he played; also, Greg finished with no assists in the game - he had had at least 1 assist in each half played since the game against FIU.

Julian Vaughn played well in limited minutes, and Omar Wattad game some serviceable relief.

And that's about it for the Hoyas.

Today's tip-of-the-cap goes to Robert "Stix" Mitchell, one of only three positive contributors for the Pirates. While J. Hazell got his through quantity (39% poss used!), Mitchell shot an efficient 8/11 on 2FG to produce 18 points for Seton Hall.

As I mentioned at the top, I'm super busy these days and the updates of stats and Big East HD box scores are falling behind. I'll try to make a push to get caught up tonight, but things may be lagging for a week or so until I can get some free time.

Seton Hall Preview

In the spirit of the somewhat ridiculous number of explanations and excuses for the rather sulfuric-smelling egg that the Hoyas laid versus a very good West Virginia team on Thursday, I'd like to take personal responsibility for the Hoyas' loss.

I did not post a preview. Obviously, the Hoyas were so distraught at the lack of attention that they felt no will to compete. I'm late today, but I won't let them down.

The Pirates:

. Offense Defense

Adj. Efficiency 108.6 (66) 102.2 (201)
eFG% 48.6 (180) 48.9 (170)
Turnover % 17.5 (19) 20.8 (174)
Off Rebound % 33.6 (162) 37.7 (308)
FT Rate 35.4 (187) 47.1 (325)

My prediction: our offensive "transformation" is going to look pretty good. In our last two games, we've faced the 5th and 3rd ranked defenses in college basketball, so it isn't exactly a shock that the offense didn't look spectacular.

Seton Hall's defense isn't special. They have little height. They don't rebound well. They foul. They don't turn the ball over. They don't force a lot of bad shots.

If the game gets close, one key will be the Hoyas making any kind of effort on the offensive boards. In some games, the Hoyas have managed to offset their own poor defensive rebounding with some good offensive rebounding (the UConn game comes to mind). In others, like WVU, they almost give up on grabbing those extra possessions and that cripples the offense. Seton Hall provides opponents with a great chance for offensive rebounds. The Hoyas need to take it.

When the Hall does play good defense, it is because they force turnovers. They haven't been nearly as good as WVU or Duke at that this year, but the Hoyas are vulnerable. The Hoyas have been sloppy with the ball recently, and no one should be looking forward to a Jason Clark - Paul Gause matchup.

Offensively, the Hall isn't a good three point shooting team, but they are streaky, especially Jeremy Hazell, who is taking over 30% of the shots while he is on the floor. That's a level of usage similar to Luke Harangody, except Hazell is only as efficient once every few games. He's an extremely streaky shooter, and if he is hot, the Hoyas' suddenly awful perimeter defense could be a huge issue.

Like any small team, the thing the Hall tends to do well when they win is offensive rebound. It's not a shock at this point to see the Hoyas outrebounded by a smaller team. The Hall isn't Duke -- small but immensely talented -- or WVU -- small but talented and strong. But if the Hoyas play lethargic, they will get many more shots than the Hoyas.

The Hoyas have lost four of six, but to very good teams. The Hall has lost eight of nine and the first two of those were to IUPUI and James Madison (in their defense, the next six were in the Big East). The Hoyas are projected to win 86% of the time by Pomeroy.

That's not crazy. West Virginia and Duke neutralized the Hoyas by going small and challenging the Hoyas to take them down low -- and Greg Monroe and the Hoyas couldn't make them pay for going small either in the low post or by crashing the offensive boards. And by playing a smaller man on Monroe, they took away his quickness advantage versus bigs. Against better teams, the Hoyas need to learn to punish teams that go small.

But Seton Hall doesn't look like a team who can take advantage of that. They could go small and play someone like Stix Mitchell on him. But I don't think they are athletic enough, and as a result the Hoyas wll likely be able to score down low and offensive rebound.

Defensively, if the Hoyas can rotate properly if they help on defense and put up any fight on the boards, they should be able to control a Seton Hall team that gets almost nothing down low.

There is a blueprint for an upset. If the Hall shoots well, rebounds, and pesters the Hoyas into another turnover filled game, they can get their first Big East win.

That said, this game is very much what Thompson always says: it's about the Hoyas. If they rebound, protect the ball and put forth the effort on defense, this should be around a ten point win on the road.
