A simple question to ask after the game is whether that was the worst loss by the Hoyas since John Thompson III arrived. It was.

By our measure, last night Georgetown played about as well as a team ranked 250th by Ken Pomeroy (that's equivalent to Texas Tech or Cornell right now). The Hoyas previous worst effort was in Coach Thompson's very first game as a coach, an 18-point loss at home against Temple.

Recap: Georgetown 64, Pittsburgh 52

Image from here
Just getting a chance to watch the rebroadcast of the game right now, so I don't know if you'll be getting much of a recap. Depends on how fired up / sleepy I am when it's over.

Annndddd . . . tiredness is going to win.  Quick thoughts before I call it a night:
  • As Tom points out in comments, the Hoyas didn't settle for many 2FG jumpers, or 3FGs for that matter. Versus 20 total jumpshots [7 2FG, 13 3FG], Georgetown attempted 19 layups in the game and made 13 of those. Pitt has been having a tough defensive year, giving up 51% on 2FGs in conference games. Smart offense by the Hoyas.
  • The best thing Pitt has done in conference this year is crash the offensive glass - grabbing 40% of their own missed shots. Not today, as Sims [10 def. reb.] and friends limited the Panthers to only 22%  off. rebounding tonight.
  • Was that Henry Sims' career game? Stats say no, he actually had one better game, against Savannah St. to open the season. Although I suppose the level of competition was a bit higher tonight.
  • And since I can't end a recap without at least one negative comment: only three Hoyas were positives on the court today (Sims, Porter, Whittington). Without Jason Clark and Hollis Thompson leading the team, a win against Cincinnati will be a much harder proposition.

Recap: Pittsburgh 72, Georgetown 60

Sorry gang - with illness and business travel conspiring against me, a stats dump is all you'll get tonight.

One quick comment:  in the first half today, Georgetown's starters shot a combined 1/8 2FG, 1/5 3FG, 0/2 FT to go along with 6 turnovers and 5 rebounds.  Ballgame.

BE Game of the Night: Notre Dame 56, Pitt 51

Just a quicky for the BE Game of the Night post today.

Image take from here.
Notre Dame walked into the Peterson Event Center tonight, and walked out even more slowly with a five point win over the Pitt Panthers.

This was a big win for the Irish - Pomeroy pegged them as an 11-point underdog going into the game - and effectively turns the rest of their Big East season from playing for a Big East tournament bye to playing for a double-bye (i.e. a top-4 seed).

The main reason I wanted to look at the game is because of Notre Dame's "burn" offense, which shortens the game by stalling until 10 seconds or so remains on the shot clock for each offensive possession. For the game, the Irish averaged an amazing 29.2 seconds per possession, and they sucked Pitt into this pace: the Panthers averaged more than 20 seconds on their offensive possessions. The end result was a 48(!)-possession game.  Contrast this with the last Pitt game I looked at (vs. Syracuse), when Pitt punished the Orange by getting scores early in the shot clock.

To put that in perspective, the slowest-paced team in college this season, the Wisconsin Badgers, averages 58 possessions per game and hasn't played a game with less than 50 possessions all year.

The Irish were led by a hot shooting night from Carleton Scott (5/6 3FG), and forced a defensive mismatch by isolating Ben Hansbrough. Additionally, the normally sharp-shooting Pitt guards struggled from behind the arc:  Ashton Gibbs leads the team in 3FG%, but was 1-5 tonight, and Gilbert Brown - a 41% shooter himself - was 1-4.  I wonder if Notre Dame's size across the backline [Hansbrough 6'3", Abromitis 6'7", Scott 6'8"] had something to do with that?

The fancy-pants stats package is after the jump.

BE Game of the Night: Pitt 74, Syracuse 66

In a truly shocking development, I actually got to sit down and watch a couple of non-Georgetown Big East games today.

Image lifted from here
The headliner:  Syracuse at Pittsburgh

Just like the Villanova-UConn game, the visiting team came in a man down; but the Orange were missing one of their big-3 stars, Kris Joseph.  Just as I did for Villanova, I'm willing to give Syracuse some slack in having to go on the road without a player that would have given their opponent some problems.

However, such is life in the Big East.

Just some random thoughts, as it's getting late:
  • Ken Pomeroy expected Pitt to score about 1.11 points per possession tonight, which is about what they did [1.09].  He figured Syracuse to get 1.05 PPP, but they fell a bit short [0.97].  I think James Southerland for Joseph tonight shows up right there.
  • During that 19-0 run to start the game for Pitt, the Panthers shot 9-12 on 2FGs, all of which were dunks, layups or tip-ins.
  • During the ensuing 17-0 run by the Cuse, the Panthers shot 0-6 on 2FGs, all of which were jump shots.
  • Pitt did a great job on Syracuse's starting guards (Scoop Jardine and Brandon Triche).  You can't overstate the athleticism of the Pitt backcourt, which played great tonight.
  • But the backups - C.J. Fair and Dion Waiters - were the best two players for the Orange tonight.
  • Speaking of athleticism, Gilbert Brown's block on Waiters was amazing in real-time speed.  That should be on YouTube any minute now.
  • I think Nasir Robinson and Brown will get the press clippings tonight, but I'm always most impressed by Brad Wanamaker.  As a fan of one of Pitt's competitors, I am so glad he's leaving after this season.

Something else I noticed tonight was how often the Panthers tried to push the ball up-court for a quick shot.  This always seems to make sense against Syracuse, as you want them to scramble and not be able to set up into their 2-3 zone.  But in a game that ended up with a pace about 4 possessions over what Pomeroy expected, I think this was a big part of Jamie Dixon's strategy (it sure is nice to have the guards to pull it off).  Did it work?

Here's a breakdown of Pitt's possessions tonight by time until "first action":
Time Poss. Points Eff.
0-8 18 27 1.50
9-20 17 21 1.24
21-25 16 15 0.94
26+ 16 11 0.69
Now some of that effect would be normal - teams are more efficient at scoring on the fast break than in their half-court offense - but I was mostly impressed that more than 1/4 of Pitt's possessions had a scoring chance within 8 seconds of getting the ball.

Full stats breakdown after the jump, if you're into that sort of thing.

Recap: Pittsburgh 72, Georgetown 57

Before tip-off tonight, Vegas pegged Georgetown as a favorite, to the shock of most Hoya fans.  In what is becoming a disturbing annual tradition, Georgetown's Big East swoon continued tonight at the Verizon Center with a thorough beat-down at the hands of the Pittsburgh Panthers, 72-57. At this point - barring an amazing turnaround - even 9 wins in conference this year will be a stretch.

As a preview for tonight's game, Tarik El-Bashir wrote an article that spent ten of the first eleven paragraphs discussing the major purported weakness for Georgetown during the swoon: offensive rebounding. The article seemed a bit strange to me, because outside of the West Virginia game, Georgetown has been about even or ahead on the boards:
Opponent OR% 1-DR% TR%
Notre Dame 29.4 32.4 48.5
DePaul 38.2 43.9 47.2
St. John's 48.1 31.3 58.4
West Virginia 19.0 44.1 37.5
Now I don't want to give TEB too much grief for several reasons:
  • he used a real measure of rebounding (OReb%) in his article
  • Georgetown really did struggle getting offensive rebounds against WVU
  • with Pitt coming in leading the nation in off. rebounding, boards were likely to be the story line again
  • he did bring up turnovers (a very real problem for Georgetown) at the end of the article
But what really worries me about the article is that TEB may not have come up with the idea on his own.  It's possible he's been trolling the depths of HoyaTalk and came across some ill-founded bile (e.g. this beauty), but I'm more worried that the story came from the prompting of the coaching staff, which means that they don't have any idea what's really wrong with the team.

Georgetown is no better than a mediocre defensive team, especially in the Big East.  When they run into a smart team making tough shots inside and open looks from the arc, they're going to give up points.  But more importantly, the Hoyas are simply not making shots - looks that were dropping in OOC play are just not going down, and frustration leads to more misses and poor effort getting back in transition.  Add in missing 10 of 14 free throws in the Lift-off half and the game was mostly over at intermission.

BE Game of the Night: UConn at Pitt

The Big East season kicked off tonight on ESPN2 with UConn playing at Pitt.  Since I actually got a chance to watch most of the game, and since the play-by-play data was clean, I decided to run the game through my stats parser.

A few thoughts after running the numbers:
  • Pitt won the game going away, 78-63, with ~66 possessions played.  Hats off to Ken Pomeroy, who wasn't very far off with his prediction (76-66 in 66 possessions).
  • For UConn, the narrative coming into the game was whether they were worthy of the #4 ranking, or if their reputation was a bit inflated by Kemba Walker's hot outside shooting touch.  The answer appears to be the latter, as Walker struggled from outside tonight [3/11 3FG] while using fully 40% (!) of his team's possessions while he was on the court.
  • A bit more on Walker:  it's easy to rip a guy who scores 31 points on 27 shots and only has 2 assists, but you need to consider the context.  Here is his shooting line for the game, compared to his teammates while he was on the floor:
    . Pts 2PM-A 3PM-A FTM-A eFG% TS%
    Walker 31 7-16 3-11 8-11 43 48
    Rest of team 27 6-18 1- 7 12-15 30 42
The fact is that Kemba is actually a rational actor here - he's generally better off shooting than passing, at least for tonight.
  •  If Walker is going to pass, his best options usually are Oriakhi, Lamb and Smith.  Tonight, Oriakhi was plagued with fouls (and lousy defense) and couldn't stay on the floor while Roscoe Smith couldn't make a shot (much to the schadenfreude-licious delight of Hoya nation).  Jeremy Lamb was about the only Husky that you could point to and say "Kemba should have passed him the ball more."
  • Pittsburgh, meanwhile, looks as good as advertised.  What I was really impressed with tonight was how well they shared the ball.  The top six players in possessions played (5 starters plus Woodall) all used between 20 and 25% of available possessions, and only Gilbert Brown had much of an off night on offense.
  • The Panthers won in spite of being out-rebounded by the Huskies, and only gathering (gasp) 41% of their own missed shots. Only Texas was previously able to pull off that trick against Pitt this season, and the rebounding margin [40.7% - 47.6% = -6.9%] was much worse tonight.  Pitt countered by making their shots, and once they stopped turning the ball over in the 2nd half their #1 ranked offense got rolling.
  • I realize he doesn't shoot much, but why doesn't Dante Taylor get more burn?

Deep bench, short rotation

JT3 subs in five players - documented! (Joseph Silverman / The Washington Times)
Alan's excellent post about likely minutes for the upcoming season got me thinking about John Thompson III's reputation for playing a short rotation.  I think this rep was developed in his first two seasons, when the cupboard was mostly bare beyond the first 6 or 7 players on the roster.  But now that he's been coaching the Hoyas for six seasons, I wonder if this reputation is myth or reality.

But before I can dig into the question of whether JT3 goes with fewer players than he should, I need to work through some basics and find a reasonable measuring stick.

First, we need to decide what constitutes being part of the rotation for a player, rather than just playing garbage minutes.  Next, we need to have some meaningful comparison of the size of Georgetown's rotation versus what other coaches/teams run.  Finally, we'll need to consider what to do about injured/suspended players and their effect on the rotation.

Recap: Georgetown 74, Pittsburgh 66

How about I leave the predictions to Brian from here on out?

On the most obvious level, this game did come down to three-point shooting. The Hoyas shot seven for ten and Pitt shot just four for 18. Even though the Hoyas' shots were generally more open, the shooting easily could have gone five or so threes the other way.

On another level, it's interesting to note the team that couldn't buy a three took 18 of them while the Hoyas only took what was given.

But to center on the three-point shooting alone would ignore the other things the Hoyas did well tonight.

The Hoyas rebounded about even with a team that ranked 56th in the nation in Offensive Rebounding % and 22nd in Defensive Rebounding %. The Hoyas had their best game of the year in terms of holding onto the ball, and while Pitt hardly plays an in-your-face style of defense this year, a 13% turnover will almost always translate to a highly effective offense.

There were still some issues. The exceptional three-point shooting was partially offset by some poor shooting inside the arc and specifically inside the paint.

On defense, Pitt had several stretches where they took advantage of slow or over-rotations, especially when the Hoyas were in their switching man to man and with the bench on the floor. Pitt has always been an excellent interior passing team, so this isn't unexpected. Still, these breakdowns are a potential point of improvement.

So, yes, it was about three-point shooting. But there's more there. The three-point difference was just so big, it's hard to see past it.

Still, an eight point win at the Pete? This team is getting better, game by game.

Let's run the numbers:

Are we seeing the start of a little bit of "different night, different hero?" It's all about match-ups, and while in previous years an argument could be made that the Hoyas didn't exploit the obvious mismatches enough, these Hoyas don't seem to have that problem.

Greg Monroe's troubles finishing in the post are well-documented at this point, and today was really no exception. I worried before the game about the potential that Nasir Robinson or Gilbert Brown might shut down Monroe simply because he wouldn't be able to take advantage enough of a smaller, quicker player.

This wasn't entirely true; McGee gave him as much trouble as the smaller guys. But the real down low mismatch was Julian Vaughn. Vaughn schooled freshman Dante Taylor and the other Panthers quite a few times on the blocks. He also dished what is likely to be a career-high six assists. Fantastic game from Julian.

The other star was Chris Wright. With the Panthers applying very little on-ball pressure, Wright played much more like an off guard today and responded by both drilling threes and driving repeatedly to the hoop. His assists were low, but that's mostly because Wright had an easier shot than a pass as he laid in basket after basket.

Austin Freeman had his usually efficient game, but he both sat a bit because of foul trouble and didn't press for a shot while in. I wasn't focusing on it, but I wonder if Dixon schemed at all to take him away. Or perhaps it was just too easy for Wright to drive.

Lastly, there's actually a bit of good news from the bench. It was only a total of thirty to forty possessions or so, but the defense was actually at its best when Hollis Thompson and Jerelle Benimon were on the floor. It's most likely just indicative of a Pitt cold spot, but perhaps the freshmen are starting to improve on defense.

Extra recap: Villanova 78, Pittsburgh 76

I've completely dropped the ball on posting HD box scores for other Big East teams due to time constraints (read: I've been very busy since the end of January), but thought I'd wake up my play-by-play parser for the Elite 8 match-up between Pitt and Villanova.

I'll leave it to others to post comments, but thought the box scores would be of some interest.

Let's run the numbers:

Another post on rebounding

Georgetown lost to the Pitt Panthers yesterday, for the Hoyas' second loss of the season, due in large part to a massive discrepancy in rebounds: 48 to 23. That's a rebounding margin of -25, or two more than the total number of rebounds that the Hoyas secured.

A few weeks ago, SFHoya99 wrote a prescient article explaining a pair of slightly more sophisticated statistics (Off. Reb. % and Def. Reb. %), which we tend to use around here rather than rebounding margin. I won't explain here why we prefer them (do read his article if you'd like to know why, it's very good), but I will re-post the equations to calculate each.
. Off. Reb.
Off. Reb. % = ----------------------------
. (Off. Reb. + Opp. Def. Reb.)

. Def. Reb.
Def. Reb. % = ----------------------------
. (Def. Reb. + Opp. Off. Reb.)

These are simple calculations - we're just looking at the number of rebounds gathered divided by total opportunities to get those rebounds. We'd expect teams to get about 1/3 of their own misses and 2/3 of their opponents', and we treat offensive and defensive rebounds separately. Again, re-read the above linked article for more information.

About a year ago, I also wrote a note about Georgetown rebounding difficulties, added to the end of a recap of an ugly road win against Rutgers. I'd like to return to it, and update the underlying statistics in an attempt to put the Pitt game into some perspective.

I mentioned then, and again in yesterday's recap, another rebounding stat called Total Reb. %. This is also a simple-to-calculate metric that serves as the stat-head analogue to rebounding margin, and is merely the average of Off. Reb. % and Def. Reb. %. That is:
. (Off. Reb. % + Def. Reb. %)
Tot. Reb. % = ---------------------------
. 2

If two teams perform equally well in a game at rebounding, each should end up with a Tot. Reb. % = 50%. Here's an example you might find in a typical box score:
Team A vs. Team B
OR DR TR OR DR TR
14 20 34 10 28 38

If you were to simply look at rebounding margin, you'd say that Team B out-rebounded Team A by four. However, if you were to calculate rebounding percentages, you'd see that the teams were even on the glass. For example, Team A's OR % = 14 / (14 + 28) = 33.3; that is, while Team A was on offense there were 42 (= 14 + 28) rebounding opportunities, and they got 14 of them, or one-third. Here are all the numbers for our hypothetical game:
. Team A vs. Team B
OR % DR % TR % OR % DR % TR %
33.3 66.7 50 33.3 66.7 50
Of course, this is not to say that rebounding margin always gives misleading information. In yesterday's game, Georgetown ended up with a Tot. Reb. % = 32.2, which looks nearly as bad as the -25 rebounding margin I mentioned at the top.

After all this introduction, allow me to roll out another in a never-ending series of overly busy plots, looking at Georgetown's Tot. Reb. % for this and the last two seasons (click to enlarge).

The points represent individual games, the solid black line indicates the 50% rebounding rate (a draw with the opponent), the solid blue, red and gray lines represent moving averages of the data (n=5 for 2006-7 and 2007-8; n=3 for 2008-9) and the dashed lines are linear fits to each year's data.

A few comments and observations:
  • Tot. Reb. % is not a stat that is adjusted for opponent, so playing a run of great or lousy rebounding teams can make your team look better or worse than they may be over the course of the season. For the sake of argument, we'll assume that the relative rebounding ability of teams played at the same time of year is roughly equal season to season.
  • The three-year trend from comparing the linear-fit lines from each season indicates that this team is the worst of the three, and by a substantial margin. Do keep in mind that there is quite a bit of uncertainty for these fits which I don't indicate, so the differences would not be considered significant in the true sense of that word.
  • More interestingly (to me) are the observed seasonal trends from comparing the moving averages for previous years, and which may be repeating again this year:
    1. After starting the season essentially neutral or noisy, the team rebounding improves strongly in December. I suspect this is from a diet of "cupcakes" during the exam period.
    2. The Big East conference season begins, and it is a shock to the Hoyas. Rebounding performance drops dramatically.
    3. By February, the team has recovered - or more likely worked hard in practice - and is rebounding nearly as well as during the December stretch.
    4. By March, the rest of the league has caught up, and Georgetown is now rebounding equally well as their opponents.
  • Just by looking at the moving averages, this year's team, while starting much more poorly than previously, looks to have recovered to roughly last year's level, before the beating from Pitt. However, it should be pointed out that about this time last year, the Hoyas took the same type of pounding on the boards in the aforementioned Rutgers game.

The question to be answered in the next few weeks is whether this team can follow the lead of its predecessors and make the same type of commitment to rebounding by February.

Recap: Pittsburgh 70, Georgetown 54

In his preview for today's game, SFHoya hit on two keys to the game - containing DeJuan Blair and attacking the basket to draw fouls. Well, the Hoyas managed to make (12) more FTs than the Panthers took (6) but less than in their previous game at UConn (18), and D. Blair and his friends ran roughshod on the offensive glass, leading Pitt to a 16-point win today at the Verizon Center.

The loss ended G'town's home win streak at 29 games (28 at Verizon, 15 against Big East teams).

The game was played at a slower pace than either team has averaged this season (Pitt at 66 possessions (adj.), G'town a fuzz slower).

The first half was a relatively even affair, with C. Wright's missed three right before the buzzer keeping the Hoyas behind heading into the locker room.

Frankly, Georgetown was lucky to be so close - the four factors for the 1st half indicate that the Panthers shot slightly better and held a decisive advantage on the boards; the Total Reb Pct. [=(OR% + DR%)/2] for G'town was 37%, so that Pitt was slightly less than twice as likely to get any available missed shot (remember that, as I'll return to it). The Hoyas shooting woes were inside the arc, where they missed 7/8 2-pt jumpers. Actually, the Hoyas shooting woes were anyone who didn't have the name "Summers" on the back of his uniform - D. Summers shot 3/6 2FG, 3/3 3FG while the rest of the team shot 2/11 2FG and 1/7 3FG in the half.

Meanwhile, both teams took care of the basketball with the Hoyas a bit more careful, and G'town also had a higher percentage of opportunities at the FT line, but could draw only 1 foul on D. Blair.

Georgetown's failure to get Mr. Blair into foul difficulties manifest itself in the 2nd half. There were 32 available missed shots in the 2nd half (17 by G'town, 15 by Pitt), and the Panthers came up with 24 of them, including 10 on the offensive glass; for the half, G'town Total Reb Pct. = 25%. Pitt's first four offensive rebounds didn't net any points, but last six resulted in 13 points. Overall, Pitt turned 20 off. rebounds into 24 points, while Georgetown converted 7 off. rebounds into 12 points - this is a case where sheer quantity trumps efficiency. (Note that I pulled those numbers directly from the play-by-play, rather than from my compiler). I suspect we'll need to return to The Problem of Rebounding several times this season.

Pitt also shot a significantly higher percentage and turned over the ball less than the Hoyas in the 2nd half.

Game over.

Looking at the individual net points box for today's game, I think it serves as a good example of how you can draw two sets of conclusions from the numbers therein, so it's important to combine the two to really understand what the stats are trying to tell us.

If you look at the last column (net points), you'd say that the following players had good games: Summers and G. Monroe of Georgetown, and S. Young, Blair and G. Brown of Pitt. That's it, as they say, that's the list.

If you look at a more familiar column (ORtg), you'd say that only Summers played well for Georgetown, while L. Fields, T. Biggs, Blair and B. Wannamaker had very strong games for the Panthers.

So, which is more correct? Well, both.
  • Example #1: Biggs was highly efficient, producing 9 points in 4.5 possessions used (ORtg = 200), but he played 51 possessions (% Poss = 8.8), so he wasn't a dominant offensive player in the game. And since he played most of the game, he is credited for more points allowed than he produced. Was he really hurting his team? Well, he properly deferred to the three-headed leader (Young-Fields-Blair) of his team, who all are typically as or more efficient than he is. But his team may have been helped even more if he could have taken a possession or two from Young today.
  • Example #2: Monroe was rather inefficient, with 14.5 points produced in 16.7 possessions used (ORtg = 87.1), but was able to end up as a positive contributor by using so many possessions (% Poss = 31.5) to accrue those points. Was he really helping his team? In this case, yes he was, since he had only 1 teammate (Summers) who was playing any more efficiently then himself.
Georgetown's Player of the Game is . . . DaJuan Summers. I know, Monroe had a slightly higher net point total, but I'm using blogger's discretion to bump Summers to the top, as he (nearly) single-handedly kept G'town afloat and in the game - his 3FG with 14:12 left actually tied the game at 40-40, at which point he had scored 19 of his team's points.

Other thoughts:
  • If anyone has seen J. Sapp's shot, please return it to him. But before anyone starts asking whether Sapp should sit more while he scuffles along, note that his defense was better than most of his teammates, so he's still playing hard despite his troubles.
  • The non-Summers Hoyas ended the game shooting 2/15 3FG for the game. While G'town wasn't going to win either way with Pitt's rebounding, the lack of an outside threat beyond Summers let the Panthers clog the lane and challenge close-in shots - G'town ended 11/22 on dunks, tip-ins and layups.
  • H. Sims played for a short stretch near the end of the 1st half, with the game still hotly contested; that was nice to see. Okay, I didn't actually notice, but that's what the box score and play-by-play say.
