Recap: Georgetown 71, St. John's 61

Image from here
Georgetown shook off the pesky St. John's Redmen today at the Verizon Center to win, 71-61.

The game was certainly not a thing of beauty, as Jason Clark and D'Angelo Harrison seemed to be in a contest for who can make a worse three-point shot attempt (clearly won by Harrison) while Karl Hess and John Cahill continually battled for the spotlight in front of the official scorer's table.

The Hoyas may have scored only 71 points today, but the game was the biggest offensive outburst the team has had in conference play. Georgetown averaged 1.25 points per possession today against the Johnnies, for their best offensive efficiency since beating up on the American Eagles in December.  Of course, St. John's defense is nothing special in terms of Big East standards, so the conference opener at Louisville will likely stand as the offense's high water mark once we adjust for opponent and venue, but that second half was very nice either way.

Conversely, the defense in the second half was nearly a disaster, as St. John's managed to get the Hoyas lead down to two or three points on several occasions, including at 56-53 with only 4:20 left in the game.  Buzz Williams at Marquette is apparently a bowling fan, because he likes to talk about having his defense rack up turkeys - get three consecutive stops - as a way of controlling the game.  The Hoyas had their share of turkeys today, but also had stretches were they couldn't string together stops: 12 points allowed in 6 possessions late the first half, 9 points in 5 possessions during the second half.

Most of the defensive issues can be attributed to two things: free throws allowed and turnovers forced. As Fran Fraschilla pointed out during the broadcast, the Redmen just don't have much offense outside of D'Angelo Harrison hoisting from 25 feet or Moe Harkless fading away in the paint so they count on those two attacking the cup to draw fouls and get some points.  Fair enough.  But today the Johnnies wouldn't give away possessions with turnovers, which was especially a key in their second half scoring. I wonder if it was in part a residue of the Hoyas packed in 2-3 zone which dared St. John's to shoot from outside.

Georgetown has the week off before heading up to New Jersey to face previously-left-for-dead Seton Hall. The Pirates have won two in a row, including a big win against Pitt today behind Herb Pope, although Mr. Pope failed to headbutt anyone in today's game.

Recap: Georgetown 69, St. John's 49

After dominating long stretches of the game only to watch their lead shrink to three points midway through the second half, the Georgetown Hoyas used a 21-4 run to close out the St. John's Red Storm at the world's most famous arena, 69-49.

A simplistic way to describe Georgetown's offensive game today is Hollis Thompson for three [5/9 3FG] and second-chance points [19 off. reb, 21 pts]. The Hoyas' offense failed to make shots in the first half, settling for too many mid-range jumpshots [3/11] rather than inside attempts [4/9]. The Hoyas turned this around in the second half, where they continually attacked the rim or followed their own miss [10/16] rather than hoisting 2FG jumpers [1/4].

The Hoyas struggled with their man-to-man defense in the second half against Cincinnati, but found the perfect opponent to work out the kinks of their 2-3 zone in the Redmen. St. John's came into the game shooting 25% on 3FGs in conference play, 14th in the Big East. So Georgetown quickly abandoned any pretense of using a man defense, preferring to pack in a zone and dare the Johnnies to shoot over the top [0/10 3FGA] or try to force the ball into the paint [23% TO rate].

St. John's found some life in the second half by drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line [14/20 FT]. Indeed, this is what fueled their own second half run as they made 8/9 FTA while whittling down a 42-31 Georgetown lead to 48-45. But the Johnnies would make only 2 free throws the rest of the way as the Hoyas ran off 21 points in their last 10 possessions to ice the game.

We'd have a clever title if this were a regular feature, which it's not

I have always been impressed by Casual Hoya's "Sleeping With the Enemy" title for their rival blogger chats before games, even if I can't shake Chris Berman's terrible nickname for Eric Bienemy when I hear it (yes, all Bermanisms are terrible).  I'm not going to try to match it.

So no witty title for our exchange of questions with Rumble in the Garden and definitely not as witty as questions as you'll likely find over at Casual (since I believe they are exchanging with Rumble as well).  That said, we have different questions, and if it is one thing that internet has proven, it's that sports fans will read anything about their favorite team, no matter the author or quality.  (To that point, Rumble will post my answers to their questions sometime soon).

So without further ado, here's the answers Pico Dulce of Rumble sent over to our astute questions:

HP:  How happy are you that Nuri Lindsey is gone? (Editor's Note:  I don't have much use for high usage, poor shooting ballhogs.)

RitG:  Nurideen Lindsey's departure is bittersweet. On one hand, St. John's is a team with seven scholarship players, most of whom struggle to get their shot. And they aren't as impressive at drawing fouls, which is a major component of what St. John's was doing well early on. With his on-court production added to the knee-jerk fan (and opponent fan) reaction whenever a player of note transfers - "what's goin' on over there?!" - it's not the most positive news.

On the other hand, Nuri's offense often had a go-for-self quality. The offense was a Nuri fast break, and then either a turnover or being backed out into an indecisive possession with Nuri clapping his hands for the ball on the perimeter, where he never hit a shot. (That's not hyperbole.) For the health of the team, for the young players' development, and for the general sense of cohesiveness, Nuri's departure ends up being a slight plus.

But an eight-man roster would have been awesome.

HP:  It's been a long since a SJU team could shoot well from the perimeter. This team doesn't look like the one that breaks the streak (though I'm sure someone will shoot 60% on Sunday) -- can the Johnnies be a real contender if they can't exploit the 3 ball?

RitG:  In a year or two, yes. What you'll likely see is a team that has some okay shooters and one designated bomber from outside. And it'll be a team that chooses to score in transition or by driving the ball instead of waiting for perimeter jump shots. The three is nice. But drawing a foul and making a two-point shot is pretty damaging to the other team.

This year? No.The team's inability to make twos (including the easy ones) and score through traffic will hurt their win/ loss total.

HP:  This year feels like a rebuilding year for SJU. Will the players stick around long enough for it to take? Is there another strong class coming in to bolster the strong (but weakened) class that is playing now?

RitG:  You've got that right. It's a complete rebuild. Only two players were around last year - one was a walk-on who has played in one game this season named Jamal White. Malik Stith, the other player, averaged 8.5 minutes per game in conference play in 2011, logged 4 DNPs, and is a low-impact, low-usage player who now averages 13.6 minutes in conference play, despite there being only 6 other options.

So yes, it's a rebuilding year.

The current class of players seem like they're in it for the long haul. One is a junior college transfer, so he won't be around much longer. The others are likely 3-4 year players, though Moe Harkless has pro potential/ pro interest. Generally, having 4 top-100 players is enough to compete with most of the league.

The 2012 recruiting class has blown away like powdery snow. So no, there is no class waiting in the wings; but the Red Storm are recruiting (and re-recruiting) the players who had decommitted in the wake of Steve Lavin's absence. The Johnnies stand a good chance with most of the players besides Norvel Pelle, one of the players deemed ineligible in the fall.

HP:  I haven't seen SJU since Lindsey left. Compare Moe Harkless and D'Angelo Harrison to similar players for me. Are either of them NBA players at some point?

RitG:  Harkless is a fairly unique player. A comparison should be to the line of long U Conn small forwards - Rudy Gay, Stanley Robinson - with length and skills, but he's not there yet in terms of completing the shots he can get off. He's skinny, long, can run, blocks shots but shows the ability to get some good shots from all over the court. I think he gets to the NBA, but he has to nail more jumpers, especially with a hand in his face in the mid-range.

D`Angelo Harrison is also hard to pin down, but I'd invoke Ben Hansbrough and Dominique Jones in comparison - high usage guards who can also pass, play tough, draw charges. I don't know that he's an NBA player - he's not a point guard but is heady. He may be a better shooter next year, but at 6'2/6'3, that's not something the NBA falls in love with except in spectacular cases. I think he'll be one of those four year players that opponents just HATE, and announcers keep telling you should get a look from the NBA. He's not as unathletic as Ashton Gibbs, though.

HP:  Does Lavin recruit entirely on how cool a kid's name sounds? C'mon, you can admit it.  (Editor's Note:  Seriously, look at their roster.  Just awesome.)

RitG:  Yes. I'm hoping for a baller named Du'Swain at some point. There's actually a Raekwon out there, class of 2013 or 2014 I believe.

HP:  How do you feel about the general long term state of the program? Given the relative upheaval in the Big East, it would be extremely advantageous for a non-football school to be very good in basketball if and when this thing falls apart. What are the chances SJU is ready for that?

RitG:  I think the future is bright.

The Big East's future is tenuous, for sure, but the program has a real leader, an urbane fellow who wins games and plays a fun style, a guy who is great at communicating with kids and bringing in recruits. Is St. John's ready for the breakup of the league? I don't think any program is. It's impossible to predict what that would look like, where the money flows come from, and what investments programs would make in their hoops.

Recap: Georgetown 77, St. John's 52

Well, when Pico over at Rumble in the Garden answered my five questions yesterday, one point he made emphatically clear was that St. John's is not a good shooting team.

Apparently, Coach Thompson and the Hoyas were also aware of this, as they managed to force the Johnnies into 43 jump shots tonight out of 59 total FG attempts. St. John's didn't make many of them [7/28 2FG jumpers, 4/15 3FG], and the rest was history.  Last time at the Garden, the Redmen managed half of their field goal attempts at the hoop, and made 14/24 on their way to the win.

Georgetown won with the second largest victory of the season tonight, 77-52.  Only the Appalachian State game was more lopsided.

Hollis Thompson is already trying to work out Big East tournament seeding possibilities to ensure that he gets to play against the Johnnies one more time this year.

This was probably a single-elimination game for the two teams, in that the loser tonight is now firmly settled into the 11th position in the Big East pecking order, with probably only 8 or 9 teams making it on to the NCAAs.  With the win, Georgetown has climbed back to 4-4 in the conference heading into a tough Saturday-Monday set at Villanova and vs. Louisville.

Five questions with Rumble in the Garden

Pico Dulce over at Rumble in the Garden contacted us to get our answers to five of his questions.  We agreed to do it, so long as he answered five of our own.

The only problem is that we never get to ask questions, so I kinda panicked when it came time to think of what to ask.  There is definitely some overlap here with the always-excellent CasualHoya interrogation, but Pico was very patient, and sent along his responses.

What is the expectation level for the team now, and how does it compare to the start of the season?
I don't know what the true expectation level for the team was early in the season; some people thought that Lavin had a magic wand and the team would be in the top of the Big East.  By "people" I mean Pitino and some insane portion of the Big East coaches who obviously value their specialized skills and seniority more than talent level.

Personally, the team is very much on the track I thought they would be - a bubble team.  (Didn't think they'd lose to Fordham and Bonaventure, though.) I thought they would score a little better, but still, not bad.

Other than two nice games at West Virginia and versus the Hoyas, the Johnnies are struggling to score in conference play [0.98 ppp].  Why?
They can't shoot.

The team has one, maybe two reliable outside shooters, but they don't look to get them shots, preferring to score in the post.  The team's wasn't bad there in the early going, but they're easy to figure out. And not only easy; they're small in the post as well. Justin Brownlee is a very good undersized power forward with touch, but he isn't always able to get good position, since everyone knows where he's going (and his shot can be blocked). Justin Burrell's touch is inconsistent; despite 4 years of basketball, he profiles as a raw rebounder with athleticism. And the other bigs are extremely bad at converting down low.

Coupled with a pair of point guards who are non-scorers and a wing in DJ Kennedy who has struggled to get his shot going... I'm impressed they've scored this well. The team's offensive strength all year has been in not turning the ball over. In the halfcourt, they're as mediocre as they were last year.

By my count, Coach Lavin had started 10 different players this year.  What's up with that?
Really? Huh!

Well, Lavin has wanted to rewards players who do well in practice - so Dele Coker and Sean Evans have gotten some starts even if mostly ceremonial, Stith has gotten a start to see what he can do, Polee and Horne sometimes switch places based on matchups... but 10!?

Speaking of Lavin, now that you've had about 2/3 of a season with him, how has the reality of Steve Lavin as head coach compared to your expectations?
I expected the on-court result - maybe slightly better, but this makes sense.

His recruiting, though, has far exceeded expectations in the first year. I honestly thought he'd struggle to fill out the roster for next year. his ability to schmooze the press is great, and the media coverage has been solid for the program - almost too much!

There has only been one article that was a little negative - George Dohrmann's from a few weeks ago (rebuttal here); other than that, the media's been tossing roses and hosannas his way.

With a big wave of recruits coming in and a raft of players graduating, are you expecting a step backward or forward next year?  Is the fan base more focused on the seniors coming together for a run in the post-season, or already working out next season's starting line-up?
A step sideways. Maybe slightly backward, when I think logically on it.

After each loss, the fans think about next year, and after each win, they look at this year's team.  A lot of folks just want the stink of the previous 2 regimes wiped away, but me, I like watching these guys.  So do many other fans.

Next year's team will be all freshmen with one sophomore and one junior who might not play much.  That's a recipe for a lot of mistakes - or to look as loosey-goosey as Memphis. But there is talent coming in - one player mentioned as a possible second round pick if he skips out and goes to the NBA draft from junior college, a top-30 recruit (or two, depending on your source), a lot of height... it could be a good team next year!  But again: all freshmen, and none of them are a lottery pick, top-5 recruit type.

Recap: St. John's 61, Georgetown 58

The Georgetown defense wasn't able to get a stop on three consecutive critical possessions late in the game, and the Hoyas lost to St. John's tonight, 61-58.

In a game where none of the "Big 3" guards was able to make a net positive contribution on the court, Hollis Thompson scored 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to keep the Hoyas in the game.  Nate Lubick scored 5 efficient points at the free throw line, gathered 4 rebounds and had 3 assists to help out.

Let's run the numbers:

While the easy story of the game is the disappointing night for Messrs. Freeman, Wright and Clark, the tempo-free box score lays clear that - in spite of the lousy shooting - the single biggest difference in the game was turnovers.

Georgetown managed a -10 [14-4] turnover margin in tonight's game.  In a 53 possession game, that means that the Hoyas would need to score more than +0.25 points per effective* possession more than their opponent.  They managed to be only +0.24 in those possessions, and that was the ballgame.
*effective possession = possession with a scoring attempt

During one stretch in the Lit-off half, Georgetown committed 6 turnovers on 7 possessions, and watched a one point deficit balloon to nine.

Deep bench, short rotation

JT3 subs in five players - documented! (Joseph Silverman / The Washington Times)
Alan's excellent post about likely minutes for the upcoming season got me thinking about John Thompson III's reputation for playing a short rotation.  I think this rep was developed in his first two seasons, when the cupboard was mostly bare beyond the first 6 or 7 players on the roster.  But now that he's been coaching the Hoyas for six seasons, I wonder if this reputation is myth or reality.

But before I can dig into the question of whether JT3 goes with fewer players than he should, I need to work through some basics and find a reasonable measuring stick.

First, we need to decide what constitutes being part of the rotation for a player, rather than just playing garbage minutes.  Next, we need to have some meaningful comparison of the size of Georgetown's rotation versus what other coaches/teams run.  Finally, we'll need to consider what to do about injured/suspended players and their effect on the rotation.

Recap: Georgetown 66, St. John's 59

Georgetown won a hard fought game against the St. John's . . . um, what are we calling them these days?  Red Storm?  ThunderHorses?  Redmen?  Johnnies?

Anyway, the Hoyas pulled it out in the end to cap off the year with a positive.

Let's run the numbers (as I sip on some Scotch waiting for midnight):

Tonight's pace was far more deliberate than either team had been averaging coming into the game (G'town: 69.5, St. J: 68.4), and be a harbinger of a slow down for the Hoyas now that conference play is underway.

I suspect that many fans will look at the 13 turnovers and think that Georgetown did a better job taking care of the ball, but with only 61 possessions in the game, that still ends up with a >20% turnover rate for the 5th consecutive game.

In spite of some poor shooting from 2FG in the first half (3/10 on 2-pt jumpers) and too many turnovers, the Hoyas were respectably efficient on offense thanks to solid shooting from behind the arc (4/7).  At the same time, they were able to limit St. John's second-chances to build a 5 point lead.

The Vesper half saw the Hoyas determined to pound the ball inside (12/16 on dunks, layup and tip-ins), but the Johnnies also made an adjustment by pounding the offensive glass to gather half of their 24 available misses (albeit three of those came in the last few seconds of the game).  Georgetown should not be satisfied with the defensive effort in the 2nd half.

The game very nearly turned on a four possession stretch in the 2nd half where the Hoyas had four turnovers (at least 3 of those unforced), and watched a 9 point lead turn into a 1 point deficit (St. John's scored 13 points in 5 possessions during that stretch, and 46 points in their other 56 possessions).  But instead of reverting to last year's nightmare, the Hoyas were able to get a dunk and two layups while holding the Redmen scoreless to regain a 6 point lead, which they sustained the rest of the way.

One other point to add:  free throw shooting.  I suspect some St. John's fans are going to look at that 4/9 FT shooting line and bemoan the fact that if only they had made the normal % of FTA, they'd have won - or at least been much closer.  This argument, or course, was the same for Hoya fans last season for both games against the Johnnies - as was noted in this space.  In summary using Tom's methodology, St. John's came in shooting 64% on FTs, so they effectively left 2 points at the line last night; G'town came in shooting 71% FTs, so effectively picked up 1.5 points at the line.  That +3.5 points was less than the margin of victory.

The first half was a bit of an encore of the Harvard Chris Wright show, as he put up 14 points (3/5 2FG, 2/3 3FG, 2/2 FT) along with 3 assists and 1 steal to go along with 0 turnovers.  What may have been missed was that Wright played just as well in the 2nd half, although he only scored 7 points (2/3, 0/0, 3/3).

Greg Monroe returned to early season form by using 30% of available possessions tonight, and made only 6/16 shots (6/15, 0/1, 3/4) but lead the team with 5 assists and 4 offensive rebounds.

Austin Freeman was he usual low usage, high efficiency self, but threw in a couple of dunks for bonus points.  Julian Vaughn did his lunchpail work in the trenches to score 8 points while leading the defense.

Clark, Thompson and Sims were relatively quiet on offense, but Sims and Clark had good defensive games - Sims struggled memorably during the 4 turnover stretch, but played very well in the first half, hopefully a good sign.

As noted elsewhere (e.g. link), this was the last game that Barker Davis will write up for the Washington Times.  An alum as well as a sportswriter, Barker's enthusiasm for the Georgetown basketball program was welcome, especially when it was in the doldrums early this decade.  I thought this post on HoyaTalk best summarized the thoughts of many Hoya fans.  Good luck, Barker!

Stats pages will be updated tomorrow.  Happy New Year.

Recap: BET 1st round, St. John's 64, Georgetown 59

Well, that's one game closer to the end of this execrable season.

The Hoyas once again lost to the St. John's Redmen in Madison Square Garden, putting an end to their Big East Tournament the same day it started. This is the 1st time Georgetown was put out in the 1st round since the 2004 tournament.

Once again, I can't track down a workable play-by-play for the game, so I'll just post a tempo-free box score.

Let's run the numbers:

. Offense Defense
. 1st Half 2nd Half Total 1st Half 2nd Half Total

Assist Rate 40.0 50.0 44.4 33.3 44.4 38.9
Block Rate 4.3 0.0 2.9 10.0 35.0 22.5

3FG% 16.7 25.0 21.4 60.0 16.7 36.4
FT% 77.8 72.2 74.1 81.8 83.3 82.8

When you look at the tempo-free numbers, you should realize just how close this game actually was.

Georgetown ended the game with a higher eFG%, better rebounding and equivalent FTA rate to St. John's. The Redmen simply made more FTs than you'd expect (the Johnies shot 65% in conference play, but 85% in two games against the Hoyas) and committed two fewer turnovers. In fact, I just looked it up and the two Georgetown games were the only conference games where St. John's shot better than 80%.

Sometimes, it's just not going to be your year.

I could go own, but just lack the will right now.

The Hoyas will presumably compete in a post-season tournament (NIT?), so no end-of-season review until then.

I'll update the sidebar stats pages in the next few days. Hopefully Tom will update the log5 predictions for the rest of the tournament either late tonight or tomorrow morning.

Recap: St. John's 59, Georgetown 56

Georgetown lost another overtime game tonight by the score 59-56 to the St. John's Redmen.

If you didn't suffer through, or managed to forget the last few Esherick years at Georgetown, tonight's game probably came as a bit of shock to you.

But for those who do remember, this game was in no way a surprise as the second semester swoon continues for the Hoyas. At this point little can be said about Our Men in Gray, as they seem incapable of stringing together consecutive strong outings. I'd guess that HoyaTalk is in full meltdown-mode for tonight and tomorrow - I'm planning on staying away for a couple of days myself.

With the loss, the Hoyas have effectively eliminated their chances of making the NCAA tournament, barring an appearance in the BET finals at minimum. Before then, they'll have to deal with the DePaul Blue Demons, currently without a win in Big East play.

Due to the vagaries of playing in The World's Most Famous Arena, no play-by-play is available for tonight's game, so a tempo-free box score is all you'll get.

Let's (sob) run the numbers:

. Offense Defense
. 1st Half 2nd + OT Total 1st Half 2nd + OT Total

Block Rate 5.6 11.1 8.3 12.5 16.7 15.0

3FG% 33.3 33.3 33.3 33.3 16.7 26.7
FT% 66.7 53.8 56.3 80.0 91.7 88.2

The old bugaboo of rebounding came back to bite Georgetown one more time - the Hoyas collected only 5 of 36 of their own available missed shots, while St. John's snagged 15 of their 35 missed shots. Those 10 extra sustained possessions for the Redmen more than offset the Hoya's 19-14 turnover advantage.

In the end - that being the last 10 minutes of regulation and all of overtime - the Hoyas offense failed them. Per the AP recap, Georgetown lead 45-30 at 10:42 in the 2nd half, having allowed St. John's to score a single 2nd half point as part of a 14-1 run to open the Vesper half - G'town managed to get outscored 21-6 the rest of the way in regulation.

As has seemed to become a tradition around here in close losses, I'll point out the FT% in the game, compared with BE conference averages for the teams:
Team FT%-Game FT%-Conf. FTM/FTA Exp. FTM/FTA
G'town 56.3 69.9 9/16 11/16
St. J's 88.2 63.9 15/17 11/17

It's really a useless point, like complaining about officiating, but if both teams had merely shot their conference average at the FT line, the Hoyas would have pulled out the game.

One final note - A. Freeman missed the game with a hip-pointer suffered in practice yesterday, also per the AP recap. His absence was likely not insignificant.
