So what happened in the second half? It was a combination of the Hoyas inability to turn the Bulls over along with watching South Florida make 7 of 13 attempts from behind the arc. In other words, it was like almost every NCAA tournament game since 2008.

It's also worth noting that the Bulls didn't make a high percentage of shots from behind the arc for the game as a whole. The real culprit on defense - and the main reason the Hoyas lost - was that Georgetown simply couldn't generate turnovers.

Recap: Georgetown 75, USF 45

Image from here
After a dreadful first half by both teams, the Hoyas scored on 13 consecutive possessions in the second half to blow open the game this morning at the Verizon Center, defeating the South Florida Bulls 75-45.

South Florida is not, I repeat not, one of the two best defensive teams in the Big East. I must have heard that at least half-a-dozen times during the broadcast. We pegged them as the 10th best defensive team coming into the game, accounting for their slow pace and weak conference schedule so far.

That's what made the first half so troublesome from the perspective of a Hoyas' fan - sure Georgetown led by eight points at the break, but the Hoyas' inability to make shots was turning what should have been a laugher into a potential nightmare game before Georgetown headed up to Syracuse.

Then the second half happened, and I decided to relax a little.

It should be noted that there was a remarkable stretch in the Lift-off half where the Bulls committed turnovers on nine, count-em nine, straight possessions. The Hoyas could manage to score only five points during that stretch, and I was certain that South Florida would make Georgetown pay. Not so much.

And now the Hoyas travel up to Syracuse for their hardest test of the season. While the Orange may have taken a small step back over their past few games playing without Fab Melo, today's pasting of the Johnnies with Mr. Melo back in the fold serves as a reminder that Syracuse is currently the team to beat in the conference, by a lot.

Recap: Georgetown 61, USF 55

With Austin Freeman struggling for the third game in a row and for the fourth time in five outings, Chris Wright and the rest of the Georgetown Hoyas did enough to make ensure the victory last night over the South Florida Bulls, 61-55.

Sickness refuses to release its steely grip from the HP crew, so another brief recap is all you'll get.

The stat that most Hoya fans will probably take away from last night's game is the 17-7 offensive rebounding margin that the Bulls enjoyed.  There are a couple of problems with this stat that have nothing to do with Georgetown's rebounding effort:
  • Last night's game is just another data point towards the great "rebounding margin is dead" revolution.  Sure, USF gathered ten more offensive rebounds than the Hoyas, but they also missed a ton more shots.  The Bulls grabbed those 17 off. rebounds on 37 available misses [46%].  It was bad, but the Hoyas have allowed worse this season, at Rutgers.
  • The Bulls made their bones on offensive rebounds in the first half, gathering 12 in the Lift-off half.  But they were only able to convert those 12 second chances into 9 points.  The gaudy rebounding stats just weren't a big help to them; their care with the ball [3 TOs on 28 possessions] was the bigger problem for the Hoyas.
Now this isn't to say that the Hoyas defensive rebounding isn't troubling - USF did convert their 5 OREB into 8 points in the second half, which means they earned a point for every off. rebound overall in the game.

Georgetown's defense overall was lousy in the game, and this was a carry-over from the UConn game.  If the defense is indeed reverting to its mid-season form, the Hoyas are in trouble, especially with Freeman looking so hesitant with his vanished outside shooting touch.

The Cincinnati Bearcats arrive at the Verizon Center on Wednesday playing for their NCAA lives, having just pulled off two convincing wins in their last two games.  Without an improved defense and the return of their offensive leader, the Hoyas will have a big test ahead of them.

Recap: Georgetown 69, South Florida 49

First, let me say "Hats off" to Mex Carey and his crack staff in the athletic department for posting a full stats package for today's game.  Most games played at MSG don't have this info, but the Georgetown website got the stats posted, and now I can post my interpretations.

For perhaps the first time this season, I'll write up the recap as a live blog.  And by "live" blog, I mean on a 10.5 hour time delay.

1st half
Opening tip to 15:44 (GU 4, USF 4):
  • Lots of fans disguised as empty seats to start the game.
  • Vaughn had a textbook post-up to start the game, then bobbled away a great pass from Monroe the next time down.  He has a nice block on defense in response.  It's the Julian Vaughn show.
  • Freeman bodies up on Jones (whom he's guarding on a switch) which results in a miss and a fastbreak layup for Wright.  Next time down, Clark guards Jones and gets taken inside for a layup.
  • Lots of turnovers so far:  2 for each team, on 7 possessions each.
15:44 - 11:48 (GU 14, USF 7)
  • Who is this reporter on the sidelines?  I've never seen her before.
  • Gilchrist looks like a good player - he just made a 15-foot jumper.  That'll be the only shot he makes this half.
  • Clark is working very hard on defense so far guarding Jones.
  • Monroe with a nice drive, and then a nice defensive rebound.  Sets up Wright, who gets the hoop and the harm (a bit of a wild drive in real time, but looked in control on the replay).
  • Vee Sanford sighting!  He appears to have secured a rotation spot.  Benimon up-and-under on a great pass from Monroe.  Fear the Hoyas bench.
  • Wright tries the same driving layup, this time no good.  I'd have to see that one again before I decide he was out of control.  But I think he was.
  • Fran Fraschilla is getting hungry.
 11:48 -7:13 (GU 19, USF 9)
  • Good interior defense by the Hoyas, but USF cleans up a blocked shot for a layup.
  • Jason Clark confused the NBA line for the college line, but still made the shot.
  • Freeman just had a ridiculous block on Jones after getting beat baseline.  He has such deceptive athleticism.
  • Monroe picked up a cheap foul chasing his own missed shot.  A bit of a frustration foul there.  Hoyas switch to a 2-3 zone once Monroe comes out.
  • Freeman with a great backdoor pass to Wright.  "Their cuts are like drives" says Doris Burke; she's used that line before.
  • Jones with an airball from deep.  USF will shoot 2/12 on jumpers in the Lift-off half, including 0/4 3FG.
7:13 - 3:33 (GU 24, USF 12)
  • With the slow pace and lousy outside shooting by the Bulls, this can't be entertaining to watch for any non-Georgetown fan.
  • Monroe back in, and the Hoyas go to a match-up 2/3 zone.  Whoops, he's back out already.  Did he sneak into the game when no one was looking?
  • Karl Hess just pointed about 4 different directions on a ball tipped out of bounds.  Finally, Hoyas ball (and I think the wrong call).
  • Freeman struggling to find his shot.  Missed a baseline jumper earlier, now missed a 3FG.
  • Clark with a between-the-legs dribble into a deep 3FG.  Who says he's only a spot-up shooter?  Oh yeah, that was me.
  • Uh-oh, Jones is finally done trying to set up his teammates.  Two consecutive drives for the foul, the second with a made basket.  If this team had a quality designated shooter (some scrub who could make 40%+ from deep), they'd be a bit more dangerous.  Jones looks like he's all alone out there.
3:33 - Halftime (GU 31 - USF 19)
  • Jason Clark cannot be stopped.  Streaky shooter, but feeling it today.
  • Jones has decided to go it alone.  Two great drives.
  • Monroe back in.  Fraschilla hates the move, then Greg grabs a rebound and scores on a drive.
  • Jones attacks Monroe for another 2 points (followed his own shot).  Kid looks like a pro.
  • Worst halftime interview in college basketball:  John Thompson III.  Never shows his cards.

Second half after a milk-and-cookies break.

2nd half
20:00 - 15:15 (GU 40 - USF 31)
  • Dave Pasch makes a big point about USF's 10 offensive rebounds (officially 9) in the 1st half, but that was on a whopping 23 opportunities - a ton of missed shots.
  • Bulls come out with 2 blocks and 4 points to get it an 8-point deficit.
  • Wright misses a lot of fast break layups trying to draw fouls.
  • Julian Vaughn was called for a foul while backing away from his man.  Literally no contact.
  • And again.  Well, on the replay, he gave a little push down low with his left hand.  Maybe last time too?  Down to a 6-point game.
  • Freeman can't buy a shot, but he draws some free throws.
  • Hoyas interior defense is getting torched off of Jones' passing.
  • Hollis Thompson makes a 3FG.  Georgetown's bench will score 8 points in the game, which is 8 more than the last game (against Cinci).
  • The soundtrack ESPN came up with is not good.  Maybe I'm just getting old.
15:15 - 11:28 (GU 48 - USF 36)
  • Wright hits a 20-foot jumper on a designed play.
  • In his mind, Greg Monroe has never committed a foul.  Doris Burke has his back this time.
  • Five minute monitor break, which changes nothing (checking Wright's jumper).  The arena is completely dead.
  • Jones is now throwing his body as Monroe or any other Hoya to draw fouls.  He's the Dwyane Wade of the Big East.
  • What a great fast break:  Monroe to Wright to Freeman.  I think Monroe is the best on the team at running the break.
11:28 -  7:30 (GU 53 - USF 39)
  • Monroe picks up his fourth foul on a moving screen. Fran and Doris point out that the call is usually the fault of the ball-handler.
  • Wright with a big 3FG after a long possession where the offense looks stagnant.
  • Vaughn fouls out on another moving screen.  Apparantly the officials decided at halftime to make that a point of emphasis.
  • Sims now in.  Doris Burke has a crush on him.
7:30 - 3:50 (GU 63 - USF 46)
  • Henry Sims with a spectacular block - of course he had his hand through the rim to get it.  Burke and Fraschilla explain why that wasn't the baseline official's missed call.  For some reason, I can't imagine Dick Vitale bothering to explain that.
  • Clark hits another 3FG from straight away - that's his shot.  Better save some for tomorrow.
  • I'm barely hanging in, and I'm a Hoya fan.  This is a tough game to watch.
  • Monroe gets clobbered by Jones and Gilchrist - no foul.  Gets his own miss and does get the call (and one).  Contact lens on the floor!
  • Monroe pulls out the spinning drive once again, finishing with his right hand.  And one.
3:50 - End of game (GU 69 - USF 49)
  • Will this game ever end?
  • Vee Sanford had his jumpshot blocked.  He shoots down too low - that'll need to be corrected over the summer.
  • Dave Pasch letting his Syracuse show, talking about Michael Graham and Jim Boeheim.
  • South Florida makes a three, finally!
  • Game over.

Recap: South Florida 72, Georgetown 64

You can call it a trap game or you can call it a bad loss, but it'll look the same in the record book at the end of the season.

What this game may have done is further inflame the debate far and wide about who is the most valuable player for the Hoyas, as Georgetown dropped yet another game when Chris Wright scored less than 10 points.

Edited to add:
Sorry, it doesn't look like I'll have time to write up a recap.  Here's some discussion of the game from Dan Hanner (uber-blogger and Basketbal Prospectus author):
South Florida was flat out the better team on Wednesday night.

[snip]

Georgetown was double and triple teaming [Dominique] Jones early in the game and leaving other players open. And Jones did what Hazell doesn’t. Jones set up his teammates. And while his teammates were missing open shots, he showed he was willing to pass and Jones made the defense respect the pass.

Then at the start of the second half, USF ran two straight plays that picked up fouls number two and three on Greg Monroe. That was huge. Monroe had been dominating the game to this point on both ends of the court. But now Greg Monroe started playing tentative to avoid his 4th foul. And the light went off for USF. Stan Heath said it in the post-game. “We knew they were more aggressive in the first half, and we knew if we had a chance, we had to become the more aggressive team in the second half.” South Florida began to take the ball to the basket relentlessly, and South Florida quickly erased a 9 point deficit and built an 8 point lead on the Hoyas.

Make no mistake. Georgetown was not overlooking USF. Georgetown came out with intensity and was making shots. Early in the game Austin Freeman was fouled on a three point attempt and still hit nothing but net. At halftime Georgetown led by 9. This was not a Georgetown team that overlooked USF. USF simply played better basketball.

Let's run the numbers:

They were never able to recover.

Recap: Georgetown 65, So. Florida 40

It's a new Hoya Prospectus tradition - when Georgetown wins a game, I watch the replay on ESPN360.com and make pithy comments, grouped by TV timeout and aided by tempo-free stats generated from the box score and play-by-play.

Here we go:

1st half - 1st TV timeout [GU 6, USF 0]
  • N. Mescheriakov starts over J. Sapp again; it's not clear to my why JTIII is doing this - I'd be interested to hear his rationale after the season is over (or sooner).
  • The crowd is sparse - some contrast to Saturday's game in the Carrier Dome.
  • Wentzel is pontificating on Georgetown's rebounding woes - only thing is that Georgetown has been rebounding respectfully since the Pitt game. In the 11 games since Pitt, the Hoyas have averaged 50.7% total rebounding.
  • Georgetown has committed three offensive fouls (only two called) on two moving screens (Mescheriakov [not called] and C. Wright) and a chicken-wing by G. Monroe. I don't mind these if this is a sign of aggressiveness on offense.

1st half - 2nd TV timeout [GU 12, USF 8]
  • J. Clark (6'2" with a 6'8" wingspan, we learn) is the 1st sub in, for A. Freeman.
  • Mescheriakov's airball 3 is answered by a good 3FG by D. Jones. Ughh.
  • The Bulls are missing a bunch of close-in shots; they seem to be rushed, although some credit to the Hoyas defense [USF shot 4/9 on dunks, layups and tip-ins in the half].
  • Sapp in for Mescheriakov after a 3FG too early in the shot-clock - Wentzel correctly points it out.
  • USF Bulls = Dominique Jones [29.0 % Poss. coming in], and a cast of thousands. Meanwhile, D. Summers commits his traditional 2nd foul early in the 1st half. H. Sims should see some extended minutes now.

1st half - 3rd TV timeout [GU 17, USF 13]
  • Sapp with a nice drive and dish to Wright for 3FG - no chemistry issues here.
  • Monroe picks G. Gilchrist clean under the Hoya basket - Monroe is 82nd in the nation in steal rate [3.87%], just below DeJuan Blair [3.94%]. It just reinforces what great hands he has for someone his size - and no, I won't check to see if anyone as tall as Monroe has as high a steal rate.

1st half - 4th TV timeout [GU 31, USF 13]
  • Georgetown gets a 10-second call the 1st time USF shows full court pressure.
  • Wright drives and dishes to Sapp for 3FG on the break - returning the favor.
  • Sapp hits another 3FG on the break; Hoyas up 10. Why is Mescheriakov starting?
  • Gilchrist picks up his 3rd PF. In spite of this, he looks impressive for a freshman; I wonder how the Hoyas would have fared if he would have ended up at Georgetown (and yes, I am aware of the baggage that made this impossible).
  • Jessie Sapp with 8 points now, for a 16 point lead. The Bulls might want to consider going zone.
  • Well, they went zone and Georgetown immediately runs a high-low play to Freeman for 2FG and the foul. Never mind.
  • USF didn't score during that segment - two turnovers, three missed jumpers, a missed layup and a missed FT.

1st half -
Halftime [GU 34, USF 17]
  • Clark hits a 3FG - He's quietly shooting a high percentage from outside [9/21 3FG his last 10 games].
  • J. Vaughn shot a little early at the end of the half, then compounded the mistake by committing an over-the-back foul trying to get an offensive rebound. Again, an aggressive mistake which is better than a passive one.
  • C. Wright ends the half with a J. Rivers (he hit the side of the backboard).
  • USF shot 5/16 2FG, 1/6 3FG, 4/10 FT in the half. Ugly.
  • GU shot 8/16 2FG, 4/7 3FG, 6/7 FT in the half. Nice.

2nd half - 1st TV timeout [GU 41, USF 23]

  • Wright opens the half with a drive for 2 FTs - Georgetown's FT rate has dropped off noticeably during the slump [FT Rate = 27.2% in the last 5 games]
  • Another drive (this time for a layup) by Wright while I type.
  • Stan Heath takes a timeout after GU opens the Vesper half 6-0.
  • USF misses another couple of FTs trying to complete and-1s. Not a good shooting night for them.

2nd half - 2nd TV timeout [GU 46, USF 30]
  • Summers finally gets on the board with a 3FG. Could mean less time for Sims this half (he actually came in soon after for Mescheriakov).
  • Wright leads another successful fast break - I think he's doing this to spite CasualHoya.
  • The Hoyas commit 3 consecutive turnovers in a row, as USF closes to 16 points.

2nd half - 3rd TV timeout [GU 53, USF 31]

  • Another GU turnover (4 in a row).
  • Mescheriakov pulled down a couple of defensive rebounds, sandwiching a missed wide-open 3FG. I wonder if he makes those in practice? - he'd be quite serviceable if he could just make the open 3FG.
  • Freeman once again got hung out by getting the ball with about :03 left on the shot clock.
  • Another Hoya fast break for a dunk by Summers. And another fast break - layup for Wright. USF won't score in transition all game. CasualHoya is getting punked right now.

2nd half - 4th TV timeout [GU 63 , USF 38]
  • Having run the numbers, I know that USF won't make a 3FG this half (0/6), and only shot 5/13 on FT, which takes away all of the tension of watching this game. Yeah, normally I'd still be nervous watching Georgetown up 20+ with 7 minutes left - so what.
  • Another fast break for G'town - just in case CasualHoya is still reading.
  • Clark runs a nice backdoor cut with a pass from J. Vaughn, as garbage time has begun.
  • D. Jones just led a fast break and finished by hitting the underside of the basket. Ughh again.
  • Each team will score one layup the rest of the way (I peeked at the play-by-play).

2nd half - Final [GU 65 , USF 40]
  • With the big lead in the 2nd half, Georgetown didn't shoot any 2-pt jumpers which shows excellent discipline.
  • Sapp had the opportunity to shoot a 3FG with about :20 left and the shot clock off, but chooses to run out the clock instead. It's subtle, but that tells me he's not frustrated with his offense anymore. Good sign.
  • Ballgame.

Great shooting night for Georgetown, terrible shooting night for South Florida. The Hoyas got careless with the basketball in the 2nd half, once the game's outcome was clear.

Player of the game is Chris Wright.
