Recap: Marquette 83, Georgetown 69

Image from here
In their final regular-season game, the Georgetown Hoyas were soundly defeated by the Marquette Golden Eagles at the Bradley Center, 83-69.

The stat of the game comes from near the bottom of the HD box score - Points after steal: Marquette 19, Georgetown 2.

Almost six minutes into the game, it felt like the Hoyas' good feelings from the previous two wins at home would carry over to the impressively raucous Bradley Center. On the back of a pair of Hollis Thompson three-point shots and some sound defense, the Hoyas led 12-9 with the ball and Marquette starting to scramble. An inside-outside play left Markel Starks wide open from behind the arc, but the ball rattled out. Two minutes later with the Hoyas ahead 14-13, Jason Clark had a similar look that also wouldn't drop.

That was the opening the Eagles needed, as they scored on their next three trips down the court and started ratcheting up the pressure to rattle the Hoyas. Davante Gardner [8 pts, 4 oreb] returned today for Maquette after missing several games due to an injured ankle and used his size to control the paint in limited action.

A horrible performance at the line [6/13 FT] while the Eagles made theirs [14/15 FT] was the obvious difference between the teams in the Lift-Off half, but the Hoyas struggled to make shots from the floor as well. Georgetown made only 2/8 layups, while taking 20 of 30 field goal attempts as jumpers [3/10 2FG jumpers, 3/10 3FG]. And perhaps that's the real difference between the two games overall - the Hoyas shot an amazing 21/25 2FGs at the Verizon Center, but 20/45 2FGs today.

The second half was effectively a stalemate. After giving up the eleven of the first thirteen points of the second half to fall into a 17-point hole, Georgetown was able to answer with a 12-3 run of their own. From there, the lead bounced between 8 and 14 points, as Jae Crowder always seemed to be able to rally his troops when the Hoyas made any sort of push.

And so the Hoyas will end the season as a 5-seed for the Big East tournament, facing the winner of Pittsburgh-Rutgers at 2pm on Wednesday.

Recap: Georgetown 73, Marquette 70

Image from here.
Alan is covering for Brian tonight.

A story of two halves tonight at the Verizon Center, as the Georgetown Hoyas clawed back from a deficit as large as 17 points in the second half by outscoring the Marquette Golden Eagles 26-10 over the final 14 possessions of the game to win 73-70.

In fact, the first half itself was a story of two halves.  In the first half of the first half, neither team could truly stop the other as Georgetown played the kind of defense last seen versus Ohio in the NCAA Tournament.

I'm not sure what kind of zone allows opposing players to stand next to the basket, but let's not play that one anymore, okay?

On offense, Georgetown stayed close by playing the Georgetown offense truly on steroids -- for the game Georgetown shot an insane 21-25 on two point shots and countered themselves by treating the basketball like a hot potato.  The Hoyas would have likely scored close to ninety if they didn't spend most of the first half chucking the ball away, often to Marquette players.  Marquette deserved some credit for this, of course, but Georgetown has by and large handled pressure well this year; this was a regression.

Both teams then simply flatlined, refusing to score.  For Georgetown, the turnovers intensified, in part fueled by Markel Starks, who probably should not have been back in the game following getting landed on by a Marquette player.  Marquette recovered and began shredding the defense that had just begun to recover.

The second half started with some back and forth, but in the end it was almost a complete reverse.  It was the Georgetown defense that was forcing turnovers; it was the Georgetown offense that was hitting its three pointers.  And the offense was still hitting pretty much every two it took.  When the Hoyas protect the ball and actually get to shoot, the offense can be deadly.

(Wait:  can this be Exhibit Z submitted as proof, alongside all the Hoyas' other comebacks, as evidence that the offense can come back from large deficits?)

But as good as the offense was in the second half, you need defense to come back just as much (if not more).  And the defense was good -- sparked by fantastic play by the freshmen perimeter duo of Jabril Trawick and Greg Whittington on D.  Nearly everyone played well on D in the second half but these two were phenomenal.

As evidence, I submit:  Greg Whittington, 17 minutes, +16 in plus/minus.  Not often you see that from a SG who scored two points.

Though every player played a role, at the end of the day, this comeback belonged to two veterans to my eye:  Hollis Thompson, whose dead-eye shots sealed the deal; and Jason Clark, who willed it to start at the beginning of the second half and simply kept scoring until we won.  The Hoyas' offense spreads shots but Clark used over 30% of his possessions when he was in, and did so with fantastic efficiency.

I'm going to go re-watch it right now.  Yes, it's one a.m. on the West Coast.  So what?

Recap: Georgetown 69, Marquette 60

Georgetown used a strong defensive second half to pull away from the Golden Eagles of Marquette today at the Verizon Center, 69-60.

Over the past five games, Georgetown has established that their defensive effort will decide the outcome of their games more than anything else.  And in the Lift-off half today, the Hoyas defense was lacking - unable to turn over Marquette and struggling with interior defense.  For the half, the Warriors shot 8/11 on dunks, layups and tip-ins out of 28 total field goal attempts.  That's means about 40% of their shots were from right at the basket (I'll come back to this).

The Gold also grabbed 6 offensive rebounds which were converted into 10 points.  Now to be clear, Marquette wasn't dominating the offensive glass [OReb% = 35%] - it just seemed that way because the Hoyas weren't getting many second chances of their own [3/16 = 19%].

Things changed after halftime:
  • Georgetown started turning Marquette over [TO Rate = 24%]
  • The Hoyas dominated their defensive glass - the Eagles gathered only 2 offensive boards on 18 available misses.
  • Most importantly, Georgetown denied inside shots.  Marquette had only 5 attempts as dunks, layups or tip-ins [shooting 4/5] out of 22 field goal attempts in the second half.  That works out to 23% of all shot attempts from close range.
Now that Marquette was forced to make jump shots, they were in trouble.  Here's the Golden Warriors' jump shooting stats by half:
Half 2FG Js 3FG Js
1st 4/14 1/3
2nd 2/8 1/9
Total 6/22 2/12
Their shooting woes also appeared at the FT line, as the normally adept Golden Eagle Warriors made only 10/17 [59%], thanks mainly to Jae Crowder's 0/4 effort.

Meanwhile, the Hoyas shook off consecutive lousy FT shooting games against Providence and Syracuse [56% and 54%] by making theirs today, including their last eleven attempts.

With today's win, the Hoyas have now won 8 straight Big East games.  Up next is another tough road test, against the UConn Huskies in Hartford.

BE Game of the Day: Louisville 71, Marquette 70

While waiting for the Georgetown at Rutgers stats to post, I decided to run the stats for the Marquette and Louisville game.

Besides being a nice rivalry game from the Conference USA days, this game was most notable for the epic collapse/comeback (depending upon your rooting interest) in the last 5 minutes, as the Cardinals came back from 18 points down with 5:40 to play to win the game.

What's really amazing to me is that, while Marquette was outscored 24-5 in the last 11 possessions, the Golden Eagles only turned the ball over once in that stretch (and L'ville did the same). So that means that in the 10 effective possessions each team had, the Cardinals averaged 2.4 points per to Marquette's 0.5 ppp.

Everyone will likely focus on Dwight Buycks blocked layup attempt when Marquette could have held the ball to force a foul and free throws. But the entire endgame is worth recapping.

During that stretch, Louisville forced the Eagles to settle for 7 jump shots (two as 3FGA) out of 9 FGAs, of which 7 were missed and rebounded by the defense. Meanwhile, Louisville's shots from the floor were all layups or behind the arc, five attempts each.

The Cards went 4/5 on each set of those attempts.

But here's the kicker: on their only two misses, Terrence Jennings managed to grab the offensive rebound and draw a foul (whereupon he promptly sank all four free throws).

And it was a combination of all of those events which set up Kyle Kuric for the game-winning layup.

The entire stats package is after the jump, for the curious.

The prevailing expectation coming into the game was that the Golden Eagles could win the game by shooting the Hoyas out of the gym from behind the arc, just like they did up in Milwaukee.  But that's not what happened then, and it's not what happened last night.

As Alan pointed out in January, Marquette pulled out the first match-up by controlling two aspects of the game:  turnovers and rebounding.  They were +3 in first-half turnover margin, and then gathered 8 of 18 own missed shots in the second half to hang on a small lead throughout.  So what happened last night?

The Lift-off half indicated that Georgetown was going to correct one of the deficiencies:  rebounding.  Marquette did an excellent job taking care of the ball once again (+2 in turnover margin) but the Hoyas controlled their defensive glass, allowing only 3 offensive rebounds (of 16 available Marquette misses) and two second-chance points.

The Hoyas offense was fairly simply: pound it inside. Georgetown made 11/19 dunks, layups and tip-ins (and only 1/6 2FG jumpers) as Monroe and Vaughn combined to shoot 8/11 on 2FG. This gave some open looks from deep, and several players made one (Wright, Thompson, Vaughn [!]).

My concern for the second half was whether Buzz Williams was going to send everyone to crash the glass on missed shots and turn last night into a replay of the first game. Turns out, I needn't worry.

Marquette missed a lot of shots in the Vesper half - there were 22 available missed shots - but only grabbed 2 of their misses. And while the Hoyas bigs cooled off (Monroe and Vaughn made 2/8 2FG), the guards stepped up with a combined 10/12 2FG, 2/4 3FG to run away with the game.

Greg Monroe had a tremendous game tonight (duh).  He was 3 assists short of the first triple-double in Georgetown history [23 pts / 12 reb / 7 assists], and he was efficient [ORat = 119] while using 35% of available possessions.  The MSM is going wild over him right now, so I'll just leave it there.  But I will note that his FT shooting is giving me heartburn - at this point, I think that's the biggest hole in his game.

Julian Vaughn deserves some accolades after getting a lot of heat around here for struggling in February.  He made some shots, including the aforementioned "No-no-no-no-yes" 3FG, but the real story was his defense.  He's credited with only two blocks - it sure seemed like he had more - but was a real problem for Marquette all night.  For the last ten minutes of the game, it seemed that he had decided that the Eagles just weren't going to get a shot off in the paint.  His 6 defensive rebounds (of 28 available misses while he was in the game) were his most in a game since DePaul.

The stat line for Chris Wright looks ordinary for him, but his was the tale of two halves.  After struggling in the Lift-off half [ORat = 62, 18% Poss], Wright found another gear after halftime [ORat = 128, 27% Poss] to ensure the win.

At this point, I've decided that Austin Freeman is just not going to make an outside shot in this tournament [0/7 3FG combined].  I think he has too, as he attempted only one in the game, instead driving and taking mid-range shots.  I can't emphasize enough that Freeman is just an offensive machine, even when he can't find his shooting touch.

With Freeman's outside shot gone missing, Jason Clark continues to make enough to keep the defense honest.  He's also become decidedly more aggressive, as he took more 2FG than 3FG for the first time since the Providence game - so much for that one-dimensional comment I made.

Hollis Thompson was able to contribute offensively tonight, but his defense was surprisingly inadequate.  He'll need to play a stronger game against Da'Sean Butler and the rest of West Virginia's long players, as they may be too quick for Julian Vaughn to cover.

Recap: Marquette 62, Georgetown 59

It'd be tempting to chalk this up to an opponent that couldn't seem to miss from three.

And to a certain extent, that would actually be more or less right. It isn't often that a team takes 11 more dunks and layups than the opposing team, holds the opposing team to 32% from 2, and loses. Repeatedly, the Hoyas were able to get easy shots. And repeatedly, the Hoyas would limit the Golden Eagles to a jump shot. Which the Marquette player would make. Some of them were wide open; but many of them were contested.

Looking deeper, though, the Hoyas still committed some cardinal sins, and they were the usual ones. The team shot decently (not well) but the offense was not particularly strong because of the usual amount of turnovers and poor offensive rebounding.

On the defensive end, the team rebounded well in the first half but couldn't grab the loose balls in the second half. The Hoyas don't lose this game, despite Marquette's outside shooting, if they keep Marquette off the boards in the second half. They didn't.

Guaranteed to be lost in this loss is Austin Freeman's devastating offensive game. He was truly spectacular, dropping 20 with 6 assists and only two turnovers. Despite the loss, he'd be my non-David-Cubillan player of the game.

If you're looking for a goat, it's probably Greg Monroe and his four turnovers or perhaps Julian Vaughn's (only) two rebounds. It was a game of small breaks, and you could pick and choose each of a number of small mistakes if you wanted to pick nits.

Recap: Marquette 78, Georgetown 72

Sorry for the tardy post - it'll have to be a numbers dump for right now. I'll try to add some commentary tomorrow.

Edited to add:
- Doesn't look like I'll have time to add much, so I'll just round up some links and quotes from the blogosphere. As always, see HoyaTalk and HoyaSaxa for discussions and links from the traditional media.

HoyaHoops
The Hoyas missed shots from close range, failed to collect defensive rebounds, and turned the ball over at critical times. Marquette meanwhile continued their remarkably consistent play and pulled away in the final moments.

Cracked Sidewalks
The game was a see-saw battle through the first 32 minutes. The final 8, Marquette slowly outlasted Georgetown, playing tight defense, nurturing a 2 point lead into a 4 point lead, into a 6 point lead, outscoring GTown 17-10 over the final stretch, not counting an uncontested 3 as time expired and the game decided.

Georgetown sinks to 5-9 in the Big East, their NCAA chances slipping away, despite their schedule, which is the 3rd toughest in the country. One could see them winning the NIT with their talent, unless they go on a serious run in the BET.

Robert Churchwell's Revenge
Greg Monroe is an ultra-talented 6-foot-10 center for whom the Marquette Golden Eagles had no answer today. If the Georgetown Hoyas had wanted to, and if Monroe had been up for it, they could have run the entire second-half offense through him and won this game. He wasn't in foul trouble, the defense was working, and there were plenty of half-court sets, even some transition opportunities, that called for Monroe to forcefully take the ball to the basket and score.

But that doesn't work when all the guy wants to do is pass. It doesn't work when the offense works to get the big man the ball inside only to watch him dish it off at the last minute when the right play would be to shoot a hook shot, or even dunk the ball and scream the roof off the place like a real, monster big man does.

It doesn't work when there's nobody to get in Greg Monroe's ear and shout, "Okay! We get it! You're a great passer! But for God's sake, man! You're 6-foot-10! Freaking SCORE already!"

Yet Another Basketball Blog
I knew it was going to be a long day for Georgetown when a fan shouted “[obsenity] Marquette” during the national anthem. There’s just no good karma coming out of that one.

CasualHoya
We didn't play that poorly today.

If anyone wants to see me jump off the Key Bridge, I suggest you head to Georgetown immediately.

Hire Esherick
If I hear another person talk about how we can get into the Tourney by winning here and doing a backflip there, I am to throw my shoe at them.

Maybe even both shoes if the person is funny looking.

Recap: Marquette 94, Georgetown 82

Well, my schedule is not relenting so I'm going to have to just do another numbers dump today. Sorry for the lack of content and updates; I'll try to start catching up tonight, but every time I've said that before, I've not been able to find the time to actually do it.

Oh, but if there's one point to take from this Big East season so far, it's that Georgetown is not playing defense at a high enough level to win games.

Let's run the numbers:
