Over the past five games, Georgetown has established that their defensive effort will decide the outcome of their games more than anything else. And in the Lift-off half today, the Hoyas defense was lacking - unable to turn over Marquette and struggling with interior defense. For the half, the Warriors shot 8/11 on dunks, layups and tip-ins out of 28 total field goal attempts. That's means about 40% of their shots were from right at the basket (I'll come back to this).
The Gold also grabbed 6 offensive rebounds which were converted into 10 points. Now to be clear, Marquette wasn't dominating the offensive glass [OReb% = 35%] - it just seemed that way because the Hoyas weren't getting many second chances of their own [3/16 = 19%].
Things changed after halftime:
- Georgetown started turning Marquette over [TO Rate = 24%]
- The Hoyas dominated their defensive glass - the Eagles gathered only 2 offensive boards on 18 available misses.
- Most importantly, Georgetown denied inside shots. Marquette had only 5 attempts as dunks, layups or tip-ins [shooting 4/5] out of 22 field goal attempts in the second half. That works out to 23% of all shot attempts from close range.
Their shooting woes also appeared at the FT line, as the normally adept Golden Eagle Warriors made only 10/17 [59%], thanks mainly to Jae Crowder's 0/4 effort.Half 2FG Js 3FG Js 1st 4/14 1/3 2nd 2/8 1/9 Total 6/22 2/12
Meanwhile, the Hoyas shook off consecutive lousy FT shooting games against Providence and Syracuse [56% and 54%] by making theirs today, including their last eleven attempts.
With today's win, the Hoyas have now won 8 straight Big East games. Up next is another tough road test, against the UConn Huskies in Hartford.
Let's run the numbers:

Just some quick hit points here under the jump:
- The Hoyas missed 20 (!) 3FGAs today in route to a 26% [=7/27] shooting day from behind the arc. This was the first game that Georgetown has shot below 30% from deep since the blowout loss to Pitt. The Hoyas started the Big East season by making less than 30% in 4 of their first 5 games.
- This is the second straight game in which Georgetown has led in turnover differential [+1 today; +1 at Syracuse]. The Hoyas hadn't been in the positive in turnover margin in any previous BE game before Syracuse: -43 in their first 11 games = -3.9 / game.
- A true nightmare scenario unfolded near the end of the first half, when Austin Freeman came up lame with a sprained ankle after fighting for a loose ball. When he didn't start the second half, there was much gnashing of teeth in Hoyaland, but Austin was able to come in about 3 minutes into the Vesper half and gut it out the rest of the way (shades of Julian Vaughn from earlier this year). Ankle sprains can be tricky, and it will bear watching if he is able to come back near 100% in time for Wednesday's game at UConn.
- In spite of the win, the best player on the floor for either team was Davante Gardner. Mr. Gardner had his way inside in his time on the court, which was greatly curtailed by foul trouble - he lasted only 17 possessions before picking up his 5th with 7:07 left.
- Which is less likely: that Chris Wright shoot 5/9 from 3FG, or that the rest of the team shoot 2/18 from deep?

Bad as that efficiency rate in the first half looks at nearly 115, it was worse through most of the half. After Butler's dunk at 2:46, Marquette didn't score the rest of the half--or in the first 3:46 of the second half: 6:32 without a score.
ReplyDeleteWhich means, before the last four possessions of the first half, all scoreless, Marquette was working at something close to a 135 efficiency rate.
That must have been some timeout Georgetown took after Butler's dunk. From there to the end of the game, Marquette managed an efficiency rating of 61 (25 points in 41 possessions).
