Recap: Georgetown 77, St. John's 52

Well, when Pico over at Rumble in the Garden answered my five questions yesterday, one point he made emphatically clear was that St. John's is not a good shooting team.

Apparently, Coach Thompson and the Hoyas were also aware of this, as they managed to force the Johnnies into 43 jump shots tonight out of 59 total FG attempts. St. John's didn't make many of them [7/28 2FG jumpers, 4/15 3FG], and the rest was history.  Last time at the Garden, the Redmen managed half of their field goal attempts at the hoop, and made 14/24 on their way to the win.

Georgetown won with the second largest victory of the season tonight, 77-52.  Only the Appalachian State game was more lopsided.

Hollis Thompson is already trying to work out Big East tournament seeding possibilities to ensure that he gets to play against the Johnnies one more time this year.

This was probably a single-elimination game for the two teams, in that the loser tonight is now firmly settled into the 11th position in the Big East pecking order, with probably only 8 or 9 teams making it on to the NCAAs.  With the win, Georgetown has climbed back to 4-4 in the conference heading into a tough Saturday-Monday set at Villanova and vs. Louisville.

Let's run the numbers:

I don't have too many extra comments for you down here below the fold.

ESPN3 decided to cut out for the first 8 minutes of the second half, so I didn't get to see the 9-1 St. John's run to start the Vesper half that probably gave live viewers some angst.

What I did see included watching Hollis Thompson and Jason Clark combine to shoot 5/6 2FG and 5/5 3FG for the game.  Nice.

I suppose the biggest story for the game is the change to the starting line-up:  Nate Lubick replaced Hollis Thompson tonight as the starting power forward.  Since I can look at such things, I thought I'd break out a few line-up efficiencies for the curious:

Lineup # poss OEff # poss DEff
Clark-Freeman-Lubick-Vaughn-Wright 24 112 25 88
All with Lubick 36 114 36 92
All with Thompson 31 126 30 57
All with Lubick & Thompson 7 143 6 67
All lineups 66 117 68 76

What's interesting to me is that I believe that Lubick started over Thompson to improve the defense, but the team played much better defense when Hollis was on the floor.  Why?

Thompson played 30 defensive possessions by my count, and on 22 of those, he was guarding the "3" position, as he had some combination of Vaughn/Sims and Lubick/Benimon on the court at the same time.  In those situations, the team surrendered 12 points [DEff = 55].  Of course, on the possessions when Hollis was the second biggest player on the court for Georgetown, the team only gave up 5 points.

This is a bit of carryover from the last St. John's game, when Thompson was the best defender on the court for either team.  In one sense, we didn't see a lot of of change tonight in spite of the line-up change.

Well, that's true except for one thing:

In conference play before tonight, Hollis spent 39% of his time on the floor as the small forward, and 61% of the time as the power forward.  Tonight, he played about 3/4 of his possessions at small forward.

Stats pages will be updated tomorrow night.
