Recap: Georgetown 68, Utah State 51

Chris Wright and the Georgetown Hoyas defeated the Utah State Aggies today 68-51 in a game that broke open early in the second half on a turnover-fueled 28-8 run.

Someone else's highlight clip.

Thanks to the vagaries of the sports monopoly - which is showing several Pop Warner games, by the way - the game wasn't available on-line until a pirate stream popped up for the second half (at least, that's when I found it).

The game was a bit of a disappointment, in that Utah State went into halftime with major foul trouble that only got worse as the Vesper half unfolded.  With my lousy video stream playing on an old 15" screen (did I mention that my fancy high-res monitor crapped out this morning?), I have no idea if the officials were calling it fairly, but then end result was an eviscerated Utah State team that simply didn't have its normal firepower to stay with the Hoyas.

Let's run the numbers:

The games was played at a glacial pace today, even by Utah State's standards. It was a bit of the shock seeing such a slow game after coming off the high of the Missouri offensive showcase, but it matched well with the interwebs chatter coming into the game that Stew Morrill would want to limit possessions in an attempt to give his team a better chance at pulling the upset.
HireEsherick is a weenie.
That didn't work.

The Hoyas didn't shoot the ball particularly well in the Lift-Off half, making none of their three 3FG attempts and only 2/5 2FG jumpers.  Even inside, Georgetown wasn't particularly efficiency [6/12 on layups and tip-ins].  But G'town did a good job holding onto the basketball [4 turnovers on 28 possessions] and had a seemingly endless procession to the free-throw line, shooting 17/19 FTs on 14 Aggie fouls.

USU hung tough throughout the first half, but were simply committing too many turnovers of their own to stay competitive.  Indeed, with the score tied at 13, the Aggies had three turnovers in four possessions and watched Georgetown move ahead 22-13.  After tying the game at 26, the Aggies turned the ball over on three straight possessions and the Hoyas led by seven.

A bit of this should be credited with Georgetown's pressure on the ball - the announcers were describing it as a means to speed up the game, but in fact it served mostly to stifle the Aggie offense.

The game broke open as USU continued to accrue fouls early in the second half, and simply couldn't hang on to the basketball long enough to get shots at the basket.  Following the aforementioned tie score at 26 with 1:43 left in the first half, the next 14 possessions saw eight turnovers by USU (four on steals) and suddenly the Hoya lead was 19 points with 13:44 left in the game.  Everyone but Orrin Hatch was speechless.

Chris Wright had himself a ballgame, in spite of the three turnovers. His constant pressure on the Aggie backcourt was too much [4 steals], and he made his living today at the FT line and in the paint.  His aggression was a key with the outside shots not falling today.

Austin Freeman and Jason Clark were a combined 0/3 from behind the arc.  I demand a recount.

Hollis Thompson seemed quiet today, but was very efficient with only one miss from the field and 4 rebounds and an assist.

Julian Vaughn managed to avoid foul trouble, and was rewarded with a highly efficient game, although not a ton of playing time.  The other bigs (Sims and Lubick) also managed positive contributions.

With the game well in hand during the second half today, Coach Thompson was able to go deep into his bench for extended minutes, with 10 players getting at least 14 possessions (~25% of the game).  Even Dougherty and Caprio got on the court at the end, but no sign of Aaron Bowen.  Anyone know why?

For USU, the net points box shows how important the many fouls on Tai Wesley were, as he managed to produce nearly +5 points for his team in only 27 possessions played.
