Recap: Georgetown 69, Tulane 53

With Julian Vaughn unavailable, Georgetown turned to Jason Clark (!) to control the glass and lead the Hoyas to victory tonight over the Tulane Green Wave at the Verizon Center.

Let's run the numbers:

For the second straight game, Georgetown was very sloppy with the ball in the first half.  However, the Hoyas also made 8/12 3FG to start the game and pull out to a 20-point lead only 18 possessions in, and the rest played out as a glorified scrimmage.  This was especially true when G'town came out of the locker room after halftime and missed their first four shots and committed a turnover, watching their lead shrink to 9 points.  A timeout by JT3 soon followed, and eventually the team retook control of the game.

Without Julian Vaughn, Georgetown could have been exploited by a strong rebounding team, but luckily for the Hoyas, Tulane is not that team.  They were ranked 281st and 282nd in offensive and defensive rebounding last year, and returned no player taller than 6'7".  As an aside, I haven't heard any updates with regards to Vaughn's health, but hopefully the training staff is reacting a bit conservatively after Austin Freeman's diabetes diagnosis last year.

Meanwhile, Georgetown continues to develop their small-ball reputation with more 3FG attempts than 2FG attempts for the game.  The last time the Hoyas took more 3FG than 2FG? Versus Baylor in the NIT.  That is a trend that will bear watching.

For the second game in a row, Jason Clark is the star of the game.  He was efficient offensively while using a high percentage of possessions, and the defensive hero by grabbing 8 defensive rebounds to help out covering for Vaughn, and ended up with a double-double for the effort.

Austin Freeman had one of those halves tonight - here it was the first half - where it looks as if he could score about every time down the court if he wanted to.  He had a quiet Vesper half, but finished his night with two effortless layups before sitting down, as if to show everyone that he could have gone for many more if he had really wanted.

Chris Wright is going to age me five years this season.

Hollis Thompson started at the 4 again tonight, and had a bit better time with the undersized Tulane front-line.  He's bringing a ton of effort, but I'm just not sure I can see him keeping up once the opponents get bigger.

Henry Sims got the start in place of Vaughn, and played well defensively.  He looks to be on his way to earning a rotation slot.  Nate Lubick seems to be settling into his role as the bull in the china shop; Jerrelle Benimon is still trying to find his role in the offense.

Play Vee Sanford!  Oh, wait, he did play . . . and kicked some ass.  Markel Starks didn't play tonight (presumably also unavailable), and Sanford was able to take advantage of his extra time and show the staff why he should also be a part of the rotation this season.
