Recap: Georgetown 72, Butler 65

Well, as often is the case with games played at Madison Square Garden, stats for the game are extremely limited.  Right now the Georgetown Athletic Dept. only has a final box score available, but no play-by-play and no stats by half.

I'll just post what I can tonight, and hope Mex Carey or someone else in Athletics can get better stats posted.

One bit of good news is that occasional contributor Ray Floriani was at the game, and sent along his recap, which I've attached under the stats.

Let's run the numbers:

From Ray Floriani

NEW YORK CITY - Georgetown passed its first major test of the season with a 72-65 victory over Butler in the opener of the Jimmy V Classic. Entering the Madison Square Garden meeting both clubs were playing at a mid-60s pace. Butler enter with an offensive efficiency of 106 while the Hoyas checked in at 112. The Hoya defense has been noteworthy to date. Rather than check points allowed, the defensive efficiency was tabulated and it is a resounding 83.

Numbers for tonight…

First Half: Georgetown 39, Butler 31

Team Poss ORating
Butler 32 97
Georgetown 33 118

Excellent offensive showing by the Hoyas largely due to a 60% eFG pct. A little too generous on the defensive end. A 27% turnover rate for the Hoyas didn’t help.

Final: Georgetown 72, Butler 65

Team Poss ORating
Butler 39 87
Georgetown 38 87

Shooting cures ills. Hoyas finished with a 51% eFG pct. Good thing as the turnover rate was a horrendous 30%. Hoyas also had a 40%-28% edge in off. rebounding percentage.

Added observations:
  • Greg Monroe barely had a touch the first ten minutes but in the second half his touches increased, especially down the stretch. Monroe enjoyed a 24 point 15 rebound night. Coach John Thompson III tried to play off the performance or any hint that Monroe SHOULD see a fair amount of touches by saying, “It is a team effort. Chris Wright didn’t score much [7 points], but ran the team. A lot of guys contributed.” JTIII also noted that statistics are not important, getting the win is. Agreed but there are times the ball should go low and Monroe should take his man. The NBA scouts in attendance shared this opinion.
  • Georgetown enjoyed a 17 point lead at one point in the second half. In a game of runs, Butler was able to build theirs on a timely trey or worse a Georgetown turnover. There were a succession of miscues (21 total) but the Hoyas weathered them and found the way to win.
  • Impressed with Austin Freeman. He scores 18 points and was able to get inside or do damage downtown (4 of 5 beyond the arc).
  • Very impressed with the defensive job done on Matt Howard. The 6'-8" Howard is the Horizon League Pre-Season Player of the Year choice. He scored 9 points and was 1 of 7 from the floor. “Matt (Howard) played hard but was frustrated tonight,” said Butler coach Brad Stevens. “We missed shots around the basket but they (Georgetown) bothered us.”
  • Gordon Hayward had a good night for Butler. Hayward tied Monroe for scoring honors (24 points) and pulled down a team high 8 rebounds.
  • Georgetown’s next game is Saturday at Washington. Thompson III wanted these games scheduled with a purpose in mind. “We wanted to get ready for a conference-like week,“ he said. “Two strong teams: one Tuesday, one Saturday. If you lose Tuesday you realize you can bounce back. If you win (Tuesday) you don’t get too excited because you have a tough one to prepare for on Saturday.“
  • Stevens was extremely impressed with Georgetown. “They are good,” the Butler mentor praised. “Their system is good and they are well coached. [Greg] Monroe is a player but he has other good players around him.”

  2. I agree. You comment is a bit prophetic, since Alan just posted an article on Monroe's usage versus efficiency this morning.

    Two other points:
    - last night's numbers are a bit rough due to limited available stats (I've added "estimated" to the net points table).
    - Monroe was the only starter without multiple turnovers, and he also had 4 off. rebounds. Both of those always help with efficiency.
