After Alan and I swore a blood oath (okay, perhaps not; but we did exchange several e-mails) that we'd put together an in-depth season preview for our reader, we dropped the ball.
So . . . you're going to have to rely upon one of the other season previews for your Georgetown Hoyas now floating in the ether. A not-very comprehensive list:
And with that, the Georgetown Hoyas basketball season tipped off today at noon at the Verizon Center, where the good guys used a 20-2 run early in the second half to put away the over-matched Savannah State Tigers, 83-54.
Meanwhile, I was at the zoo enjoying a surprisingly warm mid-November day with my family, so I didn't see any of the game. Not a second of it. So the stats will have to suffice for tonight.
Let's run the numbers:

Henry Sims is part man, part ravenous beast, albeit also part goofy. Creating 1.7 points per possession used, while using more than 1/3 of the team's possessions while on the floor is also kinda goofy, but in a positive way. Good omen?

More convinced that Otto's style of play is falling through the free tempo cracks. It's just silly to assume after watching him that he belongs in KenPom's "limited role" category. As opposed to Hollis who at times goes very silent, it seems like the plays usually go through Otto. I wonder if there was hockey-style assists it would count for some of the discrepancy since it seems he often makes the pass before the assist.
ReplyDeleteWell, one game does not a season make, either for Porter or his stats.
ReplyDeleteI think we'll get a real measure of the freshmen after three games in Maui.
And I'm not sure what to make of Porter's eight defensive rebounds - on the one hand it's great, but should a 200 lb. freshman really be leading the team on the defensive glass? Again, way too early for delusion or cynicism.
Brian, I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing you were about Porter grabbing 8 boards...as a freshman. That sticks out like a sore thumb on this team that has been anemic for years when it comes to cleaning the glass. I went back to see his HS reports and I found lots of games where he got 8, 9, 13, 16, etc. rebounds on any given night. Scouts just said he has a "deadly mid-range game" but just say he is a "good" rebounder. Too early to tell so far. But the last Big East player to have a deadly mid-range game was Richard Hamilton (UCONN) and we've seen how he's turned out.
